Former German chancellor Gerhard Schröder has arrived in Moscow, RBC reported, citing two sources familiar with his visit programme. RIA Novosti reported that the ex-chancellor came to the city for a meeting with the management of Globus. [ 1 , 2 ]
Kommersant reported, citing RBC, that Schröder met employees of a Globus hypermarket in Moscow, gave a welcome speech and then continued talking with staff in a closed format. He also planned to tour the store, the newspaper said. The company had not commented on his arrival, according to Kommersant. [ 3 ]
Kommersant reported that Schröder had been appointed a member of the supervisory board of OOO Giperglobus, which develops the Globus business in Russia; the company told the newspaper about the appointment the previous week. According to Kommersant, he will accompany the chain's strategic development in Russia, take part in its general management and contribute to long-term planning of its operations on the Russian market. [ 3 ]
The appointment relates to the Russian operator, which since January 2025 has acted independently in legal and organisational terms after being separated from Germany's Globus Holding, Kommersant reported. The board work therefore concerns the management of a separate Russian business rather than only representation of the German group, the newspaper said. Kommersant added that the company hopes to use his long-standing participation in Russia's political, economic and cultural life to maintain a dialogue approach, which Thomas Bruch described as constructive cooperation and a joint search for viable solutions. His participation on the supervisory board does not cancel rules on temporary asset management, Kommersant said. [ 3 ]
Por qué importa
The visit puts a former German head of government at a Russian retail operator that has been legally separated from its German parent since January 2025, a link that business outlets treat as commercially and politically notable. Kommersant notes that his board role concerns the separate Russian business and does not cancel rules on temporary asset management, so the appointment does not remove the existing ownership arrangements.
