Japan's Fair Trade Commission has opened an investigation into four of the country's largest brewers over suspected violations of antitrust law, according to the companies and reports by TASS, Interfax and Kommersant. The review concerns Asahi Breweries, Kirin Brewery, Suntory Spirits and Sapporo Breweries, the operating units of Asahi Group Holdings, Kirin Holdings, Suntory Holdings and Sapporo Breweries. Sapporo said the regulator suspects the companies of colluding to artificially raise prices on alcoholic beverages. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
Interfax and Kommersant, both citing The Wall Street Journal, reported that the four groups together control about 90% of the Japanese beer market. Each of the companies said in separate statements that it is fully cooperating with the regulator, according to Interfax. [ 2 , 3 ]
The disclosures moved the listed brewers' shares, Interfax reported: Sapporo fell 1.8% on Wednesday, Kirin Holdings 1.4% and Asahi Group 1%. Suntory Holdings and its subsidiary Suntory Spirits do not trade on an exchange, it said. [ 2 ]
Kommersant added that the brewers belong to the Japanese Brewers Association, which holds monthly meetings, and that, according to sources, top managers of the producers also ‘met behind the scenes' to coordinate prices. The report said the producers raised prices in October 2022 and April 2025, citing a sharp increase in raw material costs, and that the timing of the announcements of those decisions was almost identical. [ 3 ]
The documents state only that the regulator suspects a violation and that an inspection has taken place. They do not report any findings, formal charges or possible penalties, and the companies' statements as described in the reports confirm only that they are cooperating with the investigation. Why it matters
The investigation targets companies that between them control about 90% of Japan's beer market, so any finding could touch pricing across the sector. It also hit listed brewers directly: Sapporo, Kirin Holdings and Asahi Group shares fell after the companies disclosed the review. The documents do not indicate what penalties, if any, the regulator might seek.
