South African lawyer and human rights advocate Navanethem "Navi" Pillay, a former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, has won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, Russian outlets reported on October 9. The prize was awarded "for her efforts to promote peace and international law". "In historic international legal proceedings she showed that legal measures can help prevent wars and violence," the committee's press release said, according to Interfax. Vedomosti reported that the committee said Pillay had helped hold states and national leaders to account and given hope to victims of violence and conflict. [ 1 , 2 , 4 , 5 , 6 ]

At a press conference in Nuremberg, Pillay dedicated the award to survivors of international crimes. "Allow me to dedicate this award to all those who have survived international crimes, as well as to the practitioners and defenders of international justice, whose compassion and courage do not allow impunity to prevail," she said, according to RIA Novosti. [ 8 , 9 ]

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the Nobel committee had lost its moral compass. Kommersant noted that Pillay had called the actions of the Israel Defense Forces in Gaza genocide; Meduza reported that in 2025 she headed a UN commission that said Israel had committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. RBC reported that Netanyahu's office said Pillay had spread "blood libels" against Israel and contributed to the "demonisation of Jews". TASS reported that Kosachev called the award a compromise. [ 5 , 7 , 11 , 12 , 13 ]

Pillay was born in 1941 in Durban, in the Union of South Africa, to a Tamil family of Indian origin, and grew up under apartheid, Interfax reported. She opened a law firm in 1967, studied at Harvard and earned a doctorate in law in 1988. Vedomosti said her career began with defending Nelson Mandela and other opponents of apartheid. She later served as a judge and president of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, a judge of the International Criminal Court from 2003 to 2008, and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014. Interfax and RIA Novosti reported that she is currently a judge at the International Court of Justice in the case accusing Myanmar of genocide. [ 1 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 9 ]

The prize is worth 12 million Norwegian kroner, about $1.2 million, and will be presented on December 10 in Oslo, Kommersant reported, adding that there were 287 nominees, 208 individuals and 79 organisations. The 2025 laureate was Venezuelan opposition politician María Corina Machado. Kommersant also wrote that the committee's attention has increasingly shifted from "promotion of peace" toward the defence of human rights. [ 4 , 5 , 10 ]

Why it matters

The prize goes to a jurist whose career Russian outlets trace through the Rwanda tribunal, the International Criminal Court and the UN human rights post. Because Pillay had called Israel's military actions in Gaza genocide, the award drew an immediate rebuke from the Israeli government, and Kommersant placed it in a debate over the committee's shift from promoting peace toward human rights.
