North Korea says mid-range strategic missile drill held; Seoul calls it hypersonic
Version 2: New state media details and analyst assessments were added: North Korea linked the weapon to a hypersonic strategic system and said it hit a target about 1,000 km away, a figure South Korean and Japanese militaries did not report, and outlets named Ri Sol Ju as present alongside Kim Ju Ae.
In short
North Korea said it carried out a mid-range strategic missile launch drill toward the East Sea at dawn on Oct. 3, with state media reporting that Kim Jong Un observed it and that his daughter Ju Ae attended. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said it detected one ballistic missile fired from the Wonsan area at about 06:30; South Korea’s military estimated it flew more than 700 km while Japan’s defence ministry estimated about 680 km, and Rodong Sinmun said it hit a target about 1,000 km away. The launch came as tension rose over a Sept. 21 mine explosion on the western front of the DMZ, which the South says the North caused and the North denies.

North Korea said it carried out a mid-range strategic missile launch drill toward the East Sea at dawn on Oct. 3 and that Kim Jong Un observed it, state media reports cited by South Korean outlets said. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said it detected one ballistic missile fired from the Wonsan area toward the East Sea at about 06:30, Hankook Ilbo reported. Rodong Sinmun said the missile soldiers were handling a hypersonic strategic weapon system. [ 3 , 5 , 6 , 12 , 14 , 17 ]
South Korea’s military estimated the missile flew more than 700 km and Japan’s defence ministry estimated about 680 km. Rodong Sinmun said it was fired northeast and hit a target about 1,000 km away in the East Sea at coordinates Seoul Economic Daily published as 43°36’28.04” north, 138°00’47.02” east. Kim Yo Jong called the South Korean and Japanese figures “interesting numbers” that showed the limits of the enemies’ detection capability and the particularity of the North’s missile. [ 3 , 5 , 9 , 14 , 18 ]
Kim Yo Jong said the missile can change trajectory at low altitude and uses artificial intelligence, claiming there is “virtually no way to avoid this strike”. She said the Missile General Bureau told Kim Jong Un that at least four flight trajectory methods could be set by purpose and target, and that Kim was confident no other country would have such technology for at least several years. She also said the enemies “lost the target after the first boost phase”. [ 3 , 14 ]
Kim Jong Un said the activity was clearly aimed at further advancing the country’s nuclear war deterrence and that there could be no change in the North’s line. He said the North must keep making enemies aware of the reliability and lethality of its strategic strike means, calling this a form of exercising deterrence. Kim Jong Sik and Jang Chang Ha accompanied him, and his daughter Ju Ae appeared, with Kyunghyang Shinmun reporting his wife Ri Sol Ju was also present. [ 6 , 9 , 14 ]
South Korean outlets described the weapon as hypersonic and mid-range. Seoul Economic Daily said it appeared to use solid-fuel boosters applied to the Hwasong-16Na and a seven-axle mobile launcher, and that a 1,000 km range would put U.S. bases at Sasebo and Iwakuni in range, with Guam also cited given the booster’s 3,000 km-plus class. Yonhap reported the North is displaying a diversification of hypersonic missiles with irregular flight paths. Shin Jong-woo of the Korea Defense and Security Forum said the cone-shaped hypersonic disclosure was the fourth such case. [ 9 , 14 , 16 , 18 ]
The launch followed a mine explosion on the western front of the DMZ on Sept. 21, after which the Defence Ministry demanded an apology and a halt to the North’s border work while the North denied the South’s account. Yonhap reported the North fired the missile after refusing the apology demand and dialogue offers. The Unification Ministry said it had no intention to be hostile and urged dialogue, and Minister Jeong Dong-young said the dispute should not be a pretext for distorting peace efforts. Hong Min called the launch an action-based response to the South’s approach, and Yang Moo-jin said it diverted attention from the mine incident. [ 3 , 8 , 13 , 14 ]
Why it matters
The launch came days after South Korea demanded an apology over the DMZ mine explosion and pressed for dialogue, which documents say the North rejected, leaving inter-Korean military tension high. South Korean outlets said the reported range and manoeuvring capability would place U.S. bases in Japan, and potentially Guam, within reach, giving the test attention beyond the peninsula.

Still unclear
- How the missile should be classified: North Korean statements called it a mid-range strategic missile, while Rodong Sinmun described the troops as handling a hypersonic strategic weapon system and South Korean outlets called the weapon hypersonic. The documents report both descriptions without reconciling them, so the classification is not settled here.
- How far the missile flew: South Korea’s military said more than 700 km and Japan’s defence ministry about 680 km, while Rodong Sinmun said it hit a target about 1,000 km away. The figures come from different sides and differ by roughly 300 km; no document reconciles them.
- Whether North Korean troops caused the Sept. 21 mine explosion on the western front of the DMZ. The South’s account is reported and the North denies the South’s announcement, so the incident itself is disputed.
- Whether the presidential office remark carried by Asia Economy — that “slanderous language” does not help and that criticism should stop — referred to Kim Yo Jong’s statement on the missile drill or to her earlier criticism. The document carries it only as a headline in a list of other stories, with no detail or date.
