Version 2: Two further nights of ministry drone figures have been added: 861 drones reported downed in 24 hours on 5 October and 868 overnight into 6 October, along with a report that more than 500 drones were destroyed over Bryansk region in a day.

In short

Russia's defense ministry reported downing 646 Ukrainian drones on the night of 1–2 October and 559 on the night of 3–4 October, then said on 5 October that 861 drones had been destroyed in 24 hours and 868 overnight into 6 October. Russia's defense ministry said air defense forces destroyed 646 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones over the night of 1–2 October, with the attacks repelled from 20:00 to 08:00 MSK, Vedomosti and Kommersant reported. Vedomosti said the drones were downed over 14 Russian regions as well as Crimea and the Black and Azov Sea areas; Kommersant, citing the same ministry statement, said the intercepts took place over seven regions, among them Belgorod, Bryansk and Kursk, plus the Volga region, Crimea and the two seas. The two accounts of how many regions were affected differ. [ 1 , 2 ]

Two nights later the ministry reported 559 Ukrainian drones destroyed in the same 20:00–08:00 window, according to TASS, RIA Novosti, Interfax, Vedomosti and Kommersant. Interfax listed Astrakhan, Belgorod, Bryansk, Volgograd, Voronezh, Kaluga, Kursk, Oryol, Rostov, Smolensk and Tula regions, the Moscow region, Adygea, Crimea, Krasnodar region and the waters of the Azov and Black Seas, while Kommersant said the 559 drones were downed over 15 regions plus the two sea areas. [ 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 ]

On 5 October the ministry said its forces had downed 861 Ukrainian drones within 24 hours, TASS, RIA Novosti and Interfax reported. Interfax, citing the ministry, said air defenses also shot down four guided aerial bombs and a US-made HIMARS rocket, and that strikes had been carried out against sites where Ukrainian drones are stored. [ 8 , 9 , 10 ]

The following day the ministry reported 868 Ukrainian drones destroyed overnight, according to RIA Novosti, RBC and Interfax. Separately, RIA Novosti reported that more than 500 drones had been destroyed over Bryansk region in 24 hours; the documents do not say which period that figure covers. [ 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ]

Kommersant reported that a drone attack caused a fire in an apartment building in Volgograd's Krasnoarmeysky district and that one injured person was hospitalized. Vedomosti reported that Samara mayor Ivan Noskov said ground public transport in the city had been suspended because of the threat of a drone and missile attack, and that Rosaviatsia restricted operations at Samara's Kurumoch airport overnight. Vedomosti also reported that Rostov region governor Yuri Slyusar said air defenses had downed more than 110 drones over the region in the previous 24 hours and that drone danger was still present there. [ 1 , 2 ]

Kommersant said the 646-drone night was roughly a quarter larger than the night of 31 August–1 September 2026, when the ministry reported intercepting 516 drones over 19 regions, and noted that the number of drones alone does not describe the full scale of an operation because geography and the consequences of strikes or falling debris also matter. It cited the comparable episode of 3 October 2024, when even a 113-drone attack involved a person being injured and residential buildings being damaged. [ 2 ]

Why it matters

The nightly figures reported by the defense ministry and relayed by all outlets in the documents are large and recurring, and they come with visible disruption: a residential fire and a hospitalization in Volgograd, suspended public transport in Samara and overnight restrictions at Samara's airport. Kommersant noted that the number of drones alone does not describe the scale of such a night, because geography and the consequences of strikes or falling debris also matter.
