Russia says it struck Kyiv's Northern bridge, second hit on crossing in two days
Version 3: Russia's defence ministry confirmed a strike on Kyiv's Northern bridge on 4 October, the second on that crossing in two days, and Meduza reported the same strike citing the mayor, after Vedomosti had earlier reported a strike on the Northern bridge and a logistics centre.
In short
Russia's defence ministry said Russian forces struck Kyiv's Northern road bridge over the Dnieper on 4 October, describing it as a crossing used to move troops and military cargo. Kyiv head Vitali Klitschko said a strike on the morning of 3 October damaged the bridge's roadway and trolleybus contact network and that traffic was partially blocked, Meduza reported. Before that, Meduza said drones hit Kyiv's Southern bridge at least three times on 1 and 2 October, stopping traffic entirely — strikes BBC Ukrainian, cited by Meduza, called the first on the city's Dnieper bridges in wartime.

Russia's defence ministry said Russian forces struck the Northern road bridge over the Dnieper in Kyiv on 4 October, describing it as a crossing that ensured the movement of troops and the logistics of military cargo. Interfax quoted the ministry saying the bridge was hit in the daytime. RIA Novosti, TASS, RBC and Kommersant also reported the ministry's statement. Meduza reported, citing Kyiv head Vitali Klitschko, that a strike hit the Northern bridge on the morning of 4 October. [ 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ]
The 4 October strike followed an earlier one on the same crossing. Meduza reported that on the morning of 3 October a strike damaged the Northern bridge's roadway and trolleybus contact network and that Klitschko said traffic on it was partially blocked. Vedomosti also reported that Russian forces struck the Northern bridge in Kyiv and a logistics centre. [ 3 , 4 ]
Before that, Meduza reported, Russian drones attacked Kyiv's Southern bridge at least three times on 1 and 2 October, damaging a support, a barrier, the roadway and the metro's protective concrete wall, and traffic on the bridge was fully stopped. Meduza cited BBC Ukrainian as saying these were the first wartime strikes on Kyiv's bridges over the Dnieper. The city has nine bridges over the river, with the Northern and Southern among the busiest, and Meduza said traffic was partially blocked on other bridges as jams formed. [ 4 ]
Russia's defence ministry said the overnight strike of 1–2 October hit a road-rail bridge over the Dnieper in Kyiv, which Kommersant said the ministry described as used to move troops and supply military cargo to Ukrainian forces in the Donbas. Vedomosti, citing the ministry, said the same wave also hit the “Kyivska” substation in Nalyvaikivka, an industrial complex at the port of Izmail and a cargo ship in the Black Sea bound for Odesa with military and dual-use goods. Vedomosti said the ministry also reported strikes on the “Renta Logistik” transport and logistics centre, where it said a workshop for producing uncrewed boats was set up, the Hosting-ua data centre, a cargo ship at the port of Chornomorsk and, on 30 September, energy facilities in the Kyiv region, a communications centre in Kyiv and Izmail port infrastructure. The ministry said high-precision ground-based weapons and long-range strike drones were used. [ 1 , 2 ]
Kommersant noted earlier ministry reports of a strike on a bridge in the settlement of Mayaky in the Odesa region on 20 September and of the destruction of a pontoon crossing over the Dniester in September 2026, which the ministry said disrupted supplies to Ukrainian forces in the south. The documents differ on the target of the 1–2 October strike: the ministry described a road-rail bridge in Kyiv, while Meduza reported the drones hit the Southern bridge. No document reports casualties, and no document independently verifies the military role the ministry attributes to the bridges. [ 1 , 2 , 4 ]
Why it matters
The bridges over the Dnieper are Kyiv's main road crossings, and the documents say the strikes forced closures and partial closures and produced traffic jams in the capital. Russia's defence ministry frames the crossings as military supply routes, while Ukrainian reporting cited by Meduza describes the strikes as the first on Kyiv's Dnieper bridges since the war began. No document in the set reports casualties, and the stated military role of the bridges rests on the Russian ministry's account.

Still unclear
- Which bridge was hit overnight on 1–2 October. Russia's defence ministry described a road-rail bridge over the Dnieper in Kyiv, while Meduza reported that the bridge attacked by drones on 1 and 2 October was the Southern bridge; the documents do not reconcile the two identifications.
- Casualties or injuries from any of the strikes. No document in the set mentions casualties, injuries or deaths.
- The extent of damage to the Northern bridge after the 4 October strike and whether traffic has reopened. Only Meduza and the defence ministry statements cover the 4 October strike, and no document describes the damage or the state of traffic afterwards.
- Whether the struck bridges were in fact used for military logistics. That assertion comes from Russia's defence ministry; no document offers independent verification.
- The full list of targets in the Russian defence ministry's overnight report. Kommersant's list of additional targets is empty in the text provided; only Vedomosti names sites.
