Russia’s defense ministry reports strikes on cargo ships near Odesa
In short
Russia’s defense ministry said its drones struck dry cargo vessels in the Black Sea area near Odesa that it said were carrying military supplies for Ukraine’s armed forces. Russian outlets gave differing counts of the targets: Kommersant and Vedomosti reported one vessel, RBC two and Interfax four. The documents contain no comment from Ukrainian authorities and no independent confirmation.

Russia’s defense ministry said its forces struck dry cargo vessels in the Black Sea area that it said were carrying military supplies for Ukraine’s armed forces. Kommersant, Vedomosti, RBC and Interfax all cited the ministry in reports published between 3 and 4 October, and their accounts differed on how many vessels were hit. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ]
On the morning of 3 October, Kommersant reported that the ministry had announced overnight drone strikes on the Northern Bridge in Kyiv, on a logistics centre in the Kyiv region that the ministry called Gostomel, and on a dry cargo ship in the north-western part of the Black Sea. The ministry said the bridge over the Dnipro supported “troop transfers and logistics for the supply of military cargo for the armed forces of Ukraine”, that military property was stored at the logistics centre, and that the ship was delivering dual-use cargo to the port of Odesa. [ 1 ]
Later that day, Kommersant reported that the ministry’s press service said a drone had struck a dry cargo ship in the port of Odesa. [ 2 ]
On 4 October, Vedomosti reported the ministry’s statement that a drone strike on a sea crossing east of Odesa had hit a dry cargo vessel delivering military property for Ukraine’s armed forces. Kommersant carried the same account. [ 3 , 4 ]
The accounts of the number of targets diverged. RBC reported that the ministry said two dry cargo ships carrying military cargo and heading for the port of Odesa had been hit. Interfax reported the ministry saying drones of the type “Geran-4 Siker” struck four dry cargo ships — in the port of Chornomorsk, in the waters of the Bug estuary and in the Black Sea. Interfax quoted the ministry as saying “all targets were hit” and said the ministry released footage of the strikes. [ 5 , 6 ]
In the same 4 October statement, Vedomosti reported, the ministry said 559 Ukrainian drones had been destroyed over Russian regions overnight, listing regions from Astrakhan, Belgorod and Bryansk to the Moscow region, Crimea and the waters of the Azov and Black seas. Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin said nine drones were destroyed on approach to the capital, and emergency services worked at the site where debris fell, Vedomosti reported. [ 3 ]
The documents contained no comment from Ukrainian authorities, no independent confirmation of the strikes, and no assessment of damage or casualties. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ]
Why it matters
The reported strikes continue a Russian campaign against Ukrainian port infrastructure and shipping, according to the ministry’s own statements, which are the only source in these documents. Because the accounts appear in Russia’s largest business outlets, the numbers they report shape how Russian readers see the Black Sea shipping war. The absence of any Ukrainian response in the documents means the damage and the vessels’ cargo cannot be verified from this material.

Confirmed by several sources
Still unclear
- How many vessels were hit: Kommersant and Vedomosti described one ship, RBC two and Interfax four. The counts differ across reports of what appears to be the same ministry statements, and none of the documents reconciles them.
- Whether the 3 October strikes on a ship in the north-western Black Sea and in Odesa port are the same incidents as the 4 October strikes east of Odesa and in Chornomorsk. The documents describe the strikes as separate overnight reports without saying whether they concern the same vessels.
- Damage, casualties and the cargo of the vessels. Only the Russian defense ministry is cited; the documents include no Ukrainian side or independent verification.
- The ministry said 559 Ukrainian drones were destroyed over Russian regions overnight into 4 October, according to Vedomosti. Reported by a single source so far
