Temporary restrictions on the arrival and departure of aircraft were introduced at Astrakhan airport, RIA Novosti and Interfax reported early on 4 October. Interfax, citing a statement by Rosaviatsia published in the Max messenger, said the airport had suspended flight service. RIA Novosti gave no further detail. [ 1 , 2 ]

Interfax also reported that restrictions had earlier been introduced at two other airports in the south of the country, Sochi and Volgograd. It did not say when those measures were imposed or whether they remained in effect. [ 2 ]

About seven hours later the restrictions were lifted. RIA Novosti reported that the flight restrictions at Astrakhan airport had been removed, TASS reported that the airport had resumed receiving and dispatching aircraft, and Interfax reported that the airport, which it identified as Astrakhan (Narimanovo), had resumed receiving and sending flights. Interfax again attributed the information to Rosaviatsia and the Max messenger. [ 3 , 4 , 5 ]

None of the documents stated the cause of the restrictions, how many flights were affected, or whether any aircraft were diverted. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]

Why it matters

The restrictions briefly halted arrivals and departures at a southern Russian airport, and Interfax says similar measures had earlier been introduced at Sochi and Volgograd, pointing to a wider interruption of air traffic in the region. The documents give no cause, so the reason for the disruption and whether other airports are still affected remain unclear.
