Brazil's 2026 general election first round was held on 4 October, with polling stations opening at 8:00 and scheduled to close at 17:00 Brasília time, Chinese outlets reported. China News Service said voting began at 8:00 Brasília time, 19:00 Beijing time. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 7 ]
Voters were electing the president, vice president, governors of 26 states and the Federal District, 54 federal senators, 513 federal deputies and state and Federal District legislators, according to Yicai and Jiemian, which published near-identical accounts credited to CCTV News. About 158.7 million voters were eligible, 1.46% more than in 2022, including about 919,000 overseas. More than 10 candidates registered for the presidency, with incumbent President Lula and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro among those drawing wide attention. Under the rules, a candidate needs more than half of the valid votes to win in the first round; otherwise the two highest-placed candidates contest a second round on 25 October. Jiemian reported that Brazil uses electronic voting and that turnout in the first round of the 2022 election was 79.05%. [ 1 , 2 ]
China News Service said first-round results were expected within hours of polling closing. [ 7 ]
On the evening of 4 October, Brazil's Superior Electoral Court released the count. With no candidate above half, the two highest-placed — Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro and candidate of the Liberal Party, and incumbent President Lula of the Workers' Party — will contest a second round on 25 October, according to flash reports carried by China News Service, CLS and Jiemian; China News Service also attributed an account of the result to AP. [ 8 , 9 , 11 , 14 , 15 ]
Caixin reported that Flávio led the first round by a narrow margin with about 47% of valid votes, with Lula second about 2 percentage points behind. It described Brazil as Latin America's largest economy, called Flávio the son of the far-right former president and Lula the moderate-left incumbent, and said in its headline that the 80-year-old Lula's bid for re-election faced a perilous hurdle. No other document gave vote shares. [ 16 ]
Yicai reported that Lula said the result was “unexpected”. Xinhua published a piece asking why the race is so tight and where the second round will be fought; its text was not available. [ 17 , 18 ]
Why it matters
The first round decides the presidency, both chambers of Congress and state governorships in Latin America's largest economy, and no candidate crossed the threshold, so the outcome will be settled in a 25 October runoff. Caixin framed the result as a perilous hurdle for the 80-year-old incumbent Lula's re-election bid. The documents carry no China-specific angle.

Still unclear
- The exact first-round vote shares and the size of the gap between the two candidates. Only Caixin gives figures, about 47% of valid votes for Flávio Bolsonaro and a gap of about 2 percentage points for Lula; no other outlet states numbers, so these rest on a single source.
- Turnout in the 2026 first round. The documents report turnout only for 2022, at 79.05%, and give no figure for this vote.
- Lula's reaction to the result. Yicai reports only that Lula called the result unexpected, with no fuller quotation and no indication of where or when he said it.
- What several Xinhua items add beyond their headlines. Those items carry no readable text, so their content is unknown.
