Police in Ibaraki Prefecture have arrested a 30-year-old man on suspicion of stabbing a 41-year-old acquaintance at an establishment in Oarai Town, and are investigating whether he was involved in the death of a 72-year-old woman found collapsed outside, according to three local reports. [ 1 , 2 , 4 ]

Sankei Shimbun and Yomiuri Shimbun identified the suspect as Uchiyama Kotaro, 30, of unknown address and occupation. Yomiuri reported that the Mito police station suspects he stabbed the woman in the abdomen at around 21:45 on Oct 4 at premises in Gotanda, Oarai Town. Yomiuri said the weapon was branch-cutting shears with a blade about 20 centimetres long and that the wound was to her abdomen; Sankei said the weapon was gardening shears and that the wound was to her left abdomen, and Yahoo! News Japan, citing TBS NEWS DIG, also reported the left abdomen and pruning shears. Sankei and Yomiuri both said her life was not in danger. Sankei called the premises a restaurant, Yomiuri a snack bar. [ 1 , 2 , 4 ]

The 72-year-old woman was found collapsed outside — Sankei said on the grounds of a house opposite the restaurant, Yomiuri said outside the bar — and was confirmed dead at the hospital she was taken to, both papers reported. Yomiuri said she had wounds to her neck and back. Sankei reported that investigators believe she was the owner of the establishment, and Yomiuri said she appeared to be the owner. Yomiuri reported that police believe the arrested man was involved in her death and are investigating it as a murder case, while Sankei said police are looking into the connection between the two incidents. [ 1 , 2 , 4 ]

Sankei reported that the injured woman had come to the establishment as a customer together with the suspect, and that a nearby resident called the 110 emergency number saying “a man is attacking a woman”. Yomiuri described her as a company employee from Otawara, Tochigi Prefecture, and said only three people were believed to have been inside at the time. All three reports said the suspect has declined to speak to investigators. [ 1 , 2 , 4 ]

Why it matters

The case joins an assault inside a small-town night spot with a death that police have not formally tied to the arrested man; Yomiuri reported that investigators are treating the 72-year-old’s death as a murder case. Because the suspect has declined to speak and no charge over the death has been announced, the connection between the two incidents remains the central open question. The documents give no wider significance beyond the local investigation.
