Google to drop free access to Gemini Flash and Pro models on October 9
Version 2: A state news agency, RIA Novosti, has added its report of the restriction, but it carries no new details; the facts of the change and the disagreement over which subscription unlocks the Pro models are unchanged.
In short
Google will restrict access to its Gemini AI models in consumer apps for personal accounts from October 9, 2026, leaving users without a Google AI subscription only the simpler Flash-Lite model, according to the company's help centre as cited by Vedomosti. Flash-class models will require at least the AI Plus plan, while the most advanced Pro models will need AI Pro or AI Ultra, iXBT and 3DNews reported, though Vedomosti said Pro would be available with AI Plus. Google will also bring the Deep Think reasoning mode to the AI Pro tier and add low, medium and high compute-load settings to Gemini during October.

Google will restrict access to its Gemini artificial intelligence models in consumer apps for personal accounts from October 9, 2026, the company said in its help centre, according to Vedomosti. Users without a Google AI subscription will lose access to the Flash and Pro classes of models and keep only the simpler Flash-Lite, iXBT and 3DNews reported. TASS, RBC and RIA Novosti also reported the restriction. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ]
Under the new structure, Flash models will require at least the Google AI Plus plan and the most advanced Pro models AI Pro or AI Ultra, iXBT reported, with holders of the two top subscriptions keeping access to all three classes. 3DNews said AI Plus subscribers will also lose Pro, keeping Flash-Lite and Flash at $5. Vedomosti, citing Google's help centre, said Gemini Pro would become available with the AI Plus subscription and that users would be told the timing by email — a difference from the accounts given by iXBT and 3DNews. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
Google is also adding capability to paid tiers. Deep Think, described by iXBT as a mode of “maximum parallel reasoning” and previously offered only on the most expensive plans, which 3DNews put at $100 and $200 a month, will come to AI Pro, priced at $20 a month according to 3DNews. 3DNews quoted Google as saying that “Deep Think will allow the possibilities of parallel reasoning to be used to the maximum”. In October Gemini will also gain low, medium and high compute-load settings per model, which Google says can produce fuller answers but consumes usage limits faster. [ 1 , 3 ]
iXBT reported that the changes concern consumer Gemini apps for personal accounts and do not automatically extend to the Gemini API, Google AI Studio and other company products. In the Antigravity development environment, it said, Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Claude Opus 5.5 will be available only to users with a full paid AI Pro subscription and to AI Ultra holders, not to free accounts or AI Plus subscribers, and that from November 2 the Claude Sonnet 4.6, Claude Opus 4.6 and GPT-OSS-120B models will be removed. [ 1 ]
Vedomosti said Google presented a new model, Gemini 4 Argon, on October 1, designed for complex multi-stage tasks including software development, legal and financial work and cybersecurity, and already uses it internally, where it helped optimise memory use in the company's data centres and free hundreds of terabytes without buying additional equipment. 3DNews said Google has stated the model will be available to AI Ultra subscribers but has not specified whether it belongs to the Pro level or forms part of a separate, new plan. Vedomosti also recalled a Financial Times report of June 28 that Google had limited Meta's use of its Gemini models because of constrained computing resources; Vedomosti notes that Meta is designated extremist and banned in Russia. Why it matters
The change narrows what free users of a widely used AI assistant can reach and moves advanced reasoning behind paid tiers, making the AI Pro plan more attractive at the price 3DNews gives of $20 a month. Google is also using its newest model, Gemini 4 Argon, for internal tasks, and how it packages capability by tariff is watched as a signal for the commercial split between free and paid AI. Vedomosti's account of earlier limits on Meta's use of Gemini points to pressure on computing capacity.
