Goyang City said on Oct. 6 that it will hold the “Goyang Global AI Hub Forum” on Oct. 8 at the Changjo Hyeoksin Campus in Seongsa, under the theme of a strategy to attract a global AI hub to the city. Yonhap reported the announcement, and Maeil Business and Newsis also carried the plan. According to the reports, the forum will discuss Goyang’s competitiveness in the bid, ways to build an international cooperation network and tasks for the period ahead. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

The keynote address will be given by Lee Wang-jun, chairman of Myongji Hospital and incoming president of the International Hospital Federation, on “Global leadership and international cooperation in the AI era,” the reports said. Ahn Ji-ho, a research fellow at the Goyang Research Institute, will then present on how the city could attract a global AI hub, covering its conditions and direction. A panel discussion will be chaired by Hong Jin-wook, former South Korean ambassador to Singapore, with specialists from various fields debating the attraction strategy and its challenges. [ 2 , 3 ]

Goyang presents KINTEX and other international conference facilities, access to Incheon International Airport, the GTX-A regional rail network, an AI and data industry base centred on Ilsan Techno Valley, and bio, medical and education infrastructure as its main credentials. The city’s stated plan is to use these conditions to apply and test AI technology in city settings and connect that work to international cooperation. [ 2 , 3 ]

The city had already formalised its intention earlier, holding a “Goyang City UN Global AI Hub attraction declaration ceremony” at the National Assembly Members’ Hall on Aug. 25, Maeil Business reported. On Sept. 7 it launched a pan-citizen committee at the Goyang Flower Exhibition Hall with about 300 citizens attending, and the committee is continuing citizen participation activities including a campaign to collect 100,000 signatures of support, the report said. The documents do not state what time the forum will begin, nor do they name the organization that operates or would designate the global AI hub the city is seeking. [ 2 , 3 ]

Why it matters

The forum is a step in a municipal campaign to bring an international AI hub to Goyang, a Gyeonggi Province city outside Seoul. If the bid advances, it could shape how AI research, data and medical infrastructure are clustered in the Seoul metropolitan region. The documents give no indication yet of any decision by the organization that would designate such a hub.
