Russian President Vladimir Putin presented state awards in the Kremlin on 5 October to teachers and mentors who taught and raised participants of the military operation in Ukraine, according to RIA Novosti, TASS, Vedomosti, RBC and Kommersant. Putin thanked educators and mentors from all regions of Russia, TASS reported, saying their daily work, attention and honest talks with pupils had shaped their outlook, character, strength of spirit and will to win. [ 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 ]
Speaking at the ceremony, Putin said the operation’s participants are mostly young people who were born and grew up in modern Russia. According to Vedomosti and Kommersant, he said this showed the country had preserved the continuity of the best traditions of its pedagogical school, in which the formation of personality has always mattered greatly. [ 4 , 7 ]
Kommersant named some of those honoured. Vasily Mikhailov, a kickboxing coach at a youth sports school in the settlement of Markovsky in Perm region, received the medal of the Order “For Merit to the Fatherland” II degree. Yelena Yusufova and Patimat Isayeva from Dagestan were awarded the title “Honored Teacher of the Russian Federation”. [ 7 ]
Vedomosti reported that Putin supported one teacher’s proposal to create a specialised artificial intelligence in the field of education, but cautioned against replacing schoolchildren’s independent thinking with answers produced by a neural network. He said the use of AI could have unfavourable consequences if a pupil limits himself to getting a ready answer and does not work through the task independently. The same outlet reported that Putin would give the start to the “Точка будущего” educational complex in Yakutia. [ 4 ]
Kommersant also reported that veterans of the operation elected to the State Duma will be able to continue their studies so as to serve the country in a new post, with a separate preparatory course to be organised for them. Putin added that operation participants themselves are becoming mentors to children and working in the education and patriotic upbringing system. [ 7 ]
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced the president’s meeting with teachers on 5 October, Vedomosti reported, while RIA Novosti and TASS had reported earlier in the day that the award ceremony was planned. The outlets describe the recipients’ link to the operation differently: Kommersant referred to teachers and mentors of participants in the personnel training programme “Время героев”, while other outlets described them as teachers of participants of the military operation in Ukraine. Why it matters
The ceremony places the education system in the official narrative around the military operation and gives public recognition to teachers and mentors from several regions. Putin’s remarks on a specialised education AI, and his caution against relying on ready-made machine answers, indicate a cautious line on classroom use of AI. Kommersant’s reporting that veterans elected to the State Duma will get a separate training course points to continued career paths for operation participants in state bodies.
