LG Uplus and Woori Bank link telecom and bank data to detect voice phishing

🇰🇷 South Korea, Seoul 08:57 Business Business3 Tech Official updated 21 h ago first reported by 뉴시스

In short

LG Uplus and Woori Bank said they are providing a service that links telecom and financial data in real time so that suspected voice phishing calls are flagged to the bank before money moves. Under the service, LG Uplus’s AI call app ixi-O passes call-stage risk information — such as calls with suspected phishing numbers, malicious app infection or AI-altered voice calls — to Woori Bank, which then strengthens monitoring of that customer through its fraud detection system. The companies signed an MOU in August last year and plan further integration and more partner banks.

LG Uplus and Woori Bank said on October 6 that they are providing a service linking telecom and financial data in real time to counter voice phishing, according to Yonhap and ZDNet Korea. Under the service, named “ixi-O voice phishing financial safety,” LG Uplus’s AI call app ixi-O detects calls suspected of being voice phishing and transmits the risk information to Woori Bank, which then strengthens monitoring of that customer through its fraud detection system (FDS). Newsis carried the joint announcement in a headline, and Newsis and Dong-A Ilbo reported the development from Woori Bank’s side. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]

Yonhap and ZDNet Korea said existing responses by financial firms centred on transaction data such as account transfers, which made it hard for banks to see risk signs arising earlier, at the telecom stage — whether a customer had spoken with a suspected phishing number, was infected by a malicious app, or was on a call with an AI-altered voice. The new arrangement is intended to close that gap by delivering call-stage risk information to the bank before a transaction takes place. [ 2 , 3 ]

Woori Bank said it had completed real-time linkage between its fraud prevention system and ixi-O detection data and had prepared dedicated FDS detection policies based on LG Uplus data, with additional policies still being developed, Newsis reported. Dong-A Ilbo reported that the two companies signed an MOU on voice phishing prevention in August last year, began system linkage development in January this year and completed the real-time link on August 27. Newsis described the completion as recent; it did not give the August 27 date. [ 4 , 5 ]

The companies plan further steps. Newsis reported a second phase in which suspected fraud detected by Woori Bank’s FDS would be shared with LG Uplus. Yonhap and ZDNet Korea reported that LG Uplus intends to keep adding partner financial companies beyond Woori Bank, and ZDNet Korea said LG Uplus is considering a feature that would send risk information and guidance to a pre-registered guardian when ixi-O detects a dangerous call. [ 2 , 3 , 4 ]

Choi Yoon-ho, head of LG Uplus’s AI business group, said, according to Yonhap and ZDNet Korea, that voice phishing begins at the call stage and leads to financial damage, so telecom and finance must respond together to achieve practical prevention. Dong-A Ilbo quoted a Woori Bank official saying that as phishing methods evolve rapidly across the boundary between finance and telecom, close cooperation between the two companies matters. [ 2 , 3 , 5 ]

Why it matters

The service targets the call stage, before any transfer is made, which the documents describe as a gap in existing bank-centred monitoring that relies on transaction data. If it works as described, the two companies’ plan to widen the link to more financial institutions would extend the same call-stage screening to other banks’ customers, though the documents give no figures on fraud caught or prevented.
