Samsung Electronics said on 20 October that it will release the Galaxy Buds On, its first clip-type wireless earbuds in the Galaxy Buds series, on 27 October. The product comes in a single black colour and costs 299,000 won. It was first shown on 1 October, and Samsung presented its development story at a briefing in Seoul's Jung district, according to Seoul Economic Daily and Chosun Ilbo. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ]
Samsung said it focused on a comfortable and stable fit. Chosun Ilbo and Asia Economy quoted Nam Hyun-jung (남현정), a manager in Samsung's wearable product planning group, as saying the company obtained 119 million ear data points and used 4D computing-based AI optimisation and simulation. Yonhap and Asia Economy reported that the layout of the battery, speaker and wire was adjusted to spread contact area and pressure evenly, and that a band made of shape-memory alloy flexes to the shape of the ear. Lee Myung-hwan (이명환), head of the group, said, in Chosun Ilbo's words, that he is proud of Samsung's wearing-comfort technology as the best in the world. [ 2 , 4 , 6 ]
On sound, Samsung fitted a Twin Boost speaker with two woofers to offset weak bass in clip-type earbuds, where the speaker sits farther from the eardrum. Newsis and Asia Economy said the Buds4 Pro pairs a tweeter with one woofer. The earbuds also adjust volume automatically to measured surrounding noise. Samsung applied leakage-reduction technology for the first time in the Galaxy Buds series. Chosun Ilbo reported that it sends an opposite-phase sound wave from the back of the speaker to cancel leaking sound. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 6 ]
For calls, Newsis and Asia Economy reported that the Intelligent Clear Call technology combines three microphones, a bone-conduction vibration sensor and a machine-learning solution to separate the voice from background noise. Hands-free functions include calling Gemini Live by saying "Hey Google, let's talk live", and a Quick Voice Memo function. Samsung also added head gestures. Seoul Economic Daily said a nod answers a call and a shake of the head rejects it, while Chosun Ilbo and Asia Economy said a shake dismisses an alarm. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 6 ]
Newsis reported that Samsung is targeting consumers who use clip-type and kernel-type earbuds in different situations. It cited Nam as saying that, in Samsung's own consumer survey, about 73% of clip-type users also owned kernel-type earbuds. Asked why Samsung entered the clip-type market later than competitors, Lee said open-type earbuds are among the biggest recent trends and that Samsung judged the present time the most suitable. [ 5 ]
Chosun Ilbo, citing Omdia, reported that global wireless earbud shipments in the second quarter were 82.1 million, down 0.7% from a year earlier, while open-type shipments were 11.1 million, up 12%. [ 2 ]
Why it matters
The coverage presents the product as Samsung's entry into the open-type earbud market. Outlets relayed the company's own claims and a survey it cited, so how the product performs is not yet independently reported.
