Central and eastern China will see little precipitation on 22 October, while rain and snow continue in Xinjiang, where extremely heavy snowstorm may occur locally, Xinhua reported. Over the next two days, rain on the southeast coast is forecast to increase and strengthen, with rainstorm or heavy rainstorm in some areas and extremely heavy rainstorm locally. Xinhua said these need to be guarded against. [ 2 , 4 ]

Xinhua said that on the previous day rain and snow occurred mainly in the southwest and in Xinjiang. Heavy rain or rainstorm hit parts of central and southern Yunnan, southwestern Guizhou, northwestern Guangxi, southeastern Zhejiang and northeastern Taiwan, with heavy rainstorm locally in Honghe and Pu'er in Yunnan. Parts of northern Xinjiang had light to moderate snow or sleet, and locally heavy snow or snowstorm. [ 4 ]

On 22 October, Xinhua said, parts of Taiwan would get heavy rain from the outer circulation of Typhoon Qiangpi (蔷琵). As the typhoon approaches, rain on China's southeast coast is to keep increasing and strengthening on 23 and 24 October. The Central Meteorological Observatory forecast rain in parts of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Fujian and Taiwan island on those days, with rainstorm or heavy rainstorm in some areas, including northeastern Zhejiang, Shanghai and northeastern Taiwan on the 23rd. [ 4 ]

For Xinjiang, the observatory forecast moderate to heavy snow or sleet in parts of the Altay mountains, Tacheng high-altitude areas, along the Tianshan and in the Ili River valley on 22 October, with snowstorm or heavy snowstorm in some areas. China Weather Network advised people to guard against the effects of rain, snow and low temperatures on travel, agriculture and herding, and against secondary disasters on the southeast coast. [ 4 ]

On temperatures, Xinhua said temperatures fell clearly on 21 October in the east of the northeast, the Huang-Huai region and from eastern Yunnan to the south of the Yangtze, with falls of about 10°C in some places. On the morning of 22 October, lows in parts of the northeast, north China, Jianghuai and south of the Yangtze were the lowest since the second half of the year began. [ 4 ]

From 22 to 24 October, most of central and eastern China is to warm. Maximum temperatures from the northwest, north and northeast to Hunan and Guizhou are forecast to rise by about 6 to 10°C in total, locally by 15°C or more, and many places will then be warmer than normal for the time of year. From 24 to 28 October, cold air is forecast to bring strong winds and lower temperatures to most areas north of the Yangtze River. As an example, Xinhua gave Harbin, where the maximum is to reach 15°C on the 23rd and fall to 4°C on the 27th, and advised people to adjust their clothing. [ 4 ]

Why it matters

Xinhua, citing China Weather Network and the Central Meteorological Observatory, said the rain and snow could affect travel, farming and herding and that secondary disasters need to be guarded against. Large temperature swings in northern China are also expected, and the report advised people to adjust their clothing.
