Версия 2: New documents add the first confirmed casualties and a named vessel: India's foreign ministry said the Panama-flagged tanker On Peace was attacked, with 12 crew injured, 11 of them Indian, and the wounded evacuated to Khasab in Oman. Coverage also now reports several further strikes on tankers in the strait, including one that set a vessel on fire, and Bloomberg-linked figures that Iran has stepped up the pace of attacks, while the earlier 3 October explosion and the UKMTO shelling report remain separate, unresolved incidents.

Коротко

India's foreign ministry said the Panama-flagged tanker On Peace was attacked while trying to pass through the Strait of Hormuz and that 12 of its 19 crew were wounded, 11 of them Indian citizens; the injured were evacuated to Khasab in Oman with Omani help and India condemned the attack. UKMTO reported further strikes on tankers in the strait over several days, including one that caused a fire on board, and Bloomberg, cited by Vedomosti, reported Iran had stepped up the pace of attacks, with nine recorded this month.

Twelve crew members of the Panama-flagged tanker On Peace were injured when it was attacked while trying to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, India's foreign ministry said, according to Interfax and Kommersant. The ministry said 17 of the vessel's 19 crew are Indian citizens and that 11 of the 12 wounded were Indian. “We condemn the attack on the commercial vessel On Peace, flying the flag of Panama, carried out earlier today off the coast of Oman,” the ministry said. [ 8 , 9 ]

With the help of Omani authorities the injured sailors were evacuated and taken for treatment to Khasab, Kommersant reported. The ministry said the continuing attacks on vessels in the region remained a matter of deep concern for India and again called for an immediate end to such attacks and for shipping and trade along international waterways to be restored as soon as possible. [ 9 ]

The reports followed several days of strikes on tankers in the strait. Interfax reported on 3 October, citing Iranian state television IRIB News, that an explosion had occurred on an oil tanker passing through the strait; IRIB sources said the vessel was sailing in violation of rules set by Iranian authorities and had its automatic identification system switched off. RBC carried the same account, citing IRIB and Tasnim. UKMTO reported earlier on the same day that a separate oil tanker had come under fire near the coast of Oman without significant damage, with no injuries and no environmental damage. [ 1 , 2 ]

On 5 October UKMTO said a projectile of unknown origin struck a tanker transiting the strait and that a fire broke out on board, Interfax reported; TASS, citing UKMTO, said there was no information on casualties. RIA Novosti reported that three tankers had been shelled in the strait. On 6 October UKMTO reported a further strike by an unidentified projectile on a tanker as it left the strait, Interfax said, without naming the vessel. [ 5 , 6 , 7 , 10 ]

Vedomosti, citing Bloomberg and the UK's maritime operations centre, reported that Iran had increased the pace of attacks on tankers in the strait, with nine attacks recorded this month, half the number for all of September, and four strikes in the previous two days. Shipping security officials and shipping company executives said it was unclear whether the escalation would reduce volumes shipped through Hormuz, and the effect on seaborne gas supplies was also undetermined, the report said. [ 11 ]

Kommersant noted that passage through the strait had come to depend on choosing a less risky route: the International Maritime Organization recommended on 2 March that ships avoid the strait, and on 27 June UKMTO warned of remaining mines and recommended the southern route. On 25 June the IRGC said safe movement was possible only along routes officially approved by Iranian authorities, and on 28 June Tehran spoke of the need to obtain Iranian permission. According to the organization cited by Kommersant, up to a third of world oil and gas traffic passes through the strait. [ 9 ]

Почему это важно

The incidents concern commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, which the documents say carries up to a third of world oil and gas traffic, and they have caused crew casualties and drawn a formal condemnation from India. Shipping security officials and shipping company executives said it remains unclear whether the escalation will reduce volumes shipped through the strait, so the effect on energy flows is undetermined.
