Korea Western Power starts AI system to manage coal imports and inventory

🇰🇷 Южная Корея, Taean 08:58 Энергетика Бизнес2 Техно Официальные обновлено 14 ч назад первым сообщил 뉴시스

Версия 2: No substantive change: a third outlet, Newsis, also reported the launch, but added no new details beyond what was already known.

Коротко

Korea Western Power said it has begun operating an AI-based integrated control system covering bituminous coal vessel transport, offshore waiting, unloading and coal-yard inventory. Maeil Business reported the system went into full operation on Sept. 30, about a month earlier than planned, while Yonhap and Newsis reported the launch without that timing. The company says it can forecast coal consumption up to 90 days ahead and alert managers when inventory is expected to fall below safety levels, and Yonhap reported it is discussing sharing the system with other power producers.

Korea Western Power said it has begun operating an AI-based integrated control system for bituminous coal imports and inventory, covering vessel transport, offshore waiting, unloading and coal-yard inventory. Maeil Business reported the system went into full operation on Sept. 30, about a month earlier than planned. Yonhap and Newsis reported the launch without that timing detail; Newsis reported that the utility manages the full bituminous coal import and inventory process with AI. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

The system expands “ETA-Pro,” a ship schedule auto-prediction system the company built in June, to cover offshore waiting, unloading and coal-yard inventory, Yonhap reported. It uses the Automatic Identification System to refresh vessel positions every 30 minutes and generative AI to predict arrival times. Maeil Business said the system is organised into six modules covering vessel transport, offshore waiting, unloading, inventory status and overall control. [ 1 , 2 ]

In the offshore waiting stage, the system calculates berthing times by reflecting queue order and tide and weather conditions, while unloading progress and inventory by coal type are managed in real time. If a vessel arrives late, the forecast is automatically recalculated through offshore waiting, berthing and completion of unloading to the coal-yard inventory. Based on this, the company says it can predict when coal will be consumed up to 90 days ahead and issue an alert if inventory is expected to fall below its safety standard. Maeil Business reported that management can view inventory levels, per-vessel progress, future inventory forecasts and departmental action items on a single control screen. [ 1 , 2 ]

President Lee Jung-bok said the system would be used to contribute to stable fuel supply and national energy supply chain stability, and that the company would share the technology and experience accumulated during its own development with the power industry to help spread AI transition in the public sector, both outlets reported. [ 1 , 2 ]

Yonhap reported that the company plans to raise forecast accuracy through user education and the accumulation of operating data, is in talks on sharing the system with other power producers, and is preparing a service to provide port safety information to the public. Maeil Business reported separately that the system won a top prize in a recent internal innovation contest and that the company is pursuing a patent for its core ship arrival prediction and alert algorithm. [ 1 , 2 ]

Почему это важно

The company presents the system as a way to stabilise fuel supply and the national energy supply chain, and says it wants to spread AI adoption in the public sector. Yonhap, an official-type outlet, reports the utility is in talks to share the system with other power producers, which would extend its effect beyond one company. The documents give no measured results, such as forecast accuracy or cost savings.

Пока неясно

  • Whether the system began operation about a month earlier than originally planned. Only Maeil Business states the one-month early start; Yonhap and Newsis do not mention the original schedule.
  • What the talks on sharing the system with other power companies and the planned public port safety information service will involve, and when they would happen. Yonhap reports the plans and negotiations without a timetable, scope or counterparties, and no other document covers them.
  • The status of the patent application for the ship arrival prediction and alert algorithm. Only Maeil Business mentions the patent filing, and it says only that an application is being pursued.
  • How well the system performs in practice. No document gives accuracy rates, cost savings or other measured outcomes of the system.
