DP World has secured a 10-year extension to its concession to operate the multipurpose container terminal at Angola's Port of Luanda, taking the agreement to 2051. The Dubai-based operator announced a further $90 million investment over the next two years, on top of more than $260 million already spent since it began operating the terminal in 2021. DP World has been granted a 10-year extension to its concession to operate the multipurpose container terminal at the Port of Luanda in Angola, extending the agreement until 2051. The company said the extension was announced at the inauguration of the terminal's new container building. The state news agency WAM reported the extension, and business outlets in the UAE reported the same concession term. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]
Alongside the extension, DP World announced a further $90 million investment over the next two years to expand the terminal's infrastructure, equipment and operational capabilities. The programme will extend the quay by 222 metres, add 10 hectares of operational space and raise the facility's design capacity to 1.2 million TEUs. It includes the acquisition of three ship-to-shore gantry cranes and 12 semi-automated rubber-tyred gantry cranes, which the company said will allow the terminal to handle two Post-Panamax vessels simultaneously. [ 1 , 2 , 4 , 5 ]
DP World said it has invested more than $260 million in developing and modernising the terminal since it began operating there in 2021. Over the past five years, container throughput nearly doubled from 177,000 TEUs to more than 350,000 TEUs, supported by the addition of 28,000 square metres of container handling yard space. The company added two mobile harbour cranes and new empty-container handling equipment this year, bringing total mobile cranes at the terminal to eight, and expanded refrigerated container connection points from 630 to 700. [ 1 , 2 , 4 ]
“The expansion of DP World Luanda is an important milestone both for Angola and for the wider region,” said Mohammed Akoojee, chief executive and managing director for Africa at DP World, according to the reports. He said the ability to handle larger vessels would support new shipping services and strengthen the terminal's potential as a gateway for West and Central Africa, and that the investment would improve the efficiency of trade flows and give customers shorter turnaround times. Paco Pinzon, chief executive of DP World Luanda, said having the concession extended to 2051 demonstrated the company's long-term commitment to Angola as a regional trade gateway. [ 1 , 2 , 4 ]
The outlets differed on the terminal's current capacity. The National reported the expansion would raise capacity to more than 1.2 million TEUs from a current 500,000 TEU, a figure not given by the other documents, which reported throughput of more than 350,000 TEUs. Arabian Business said the expansion would increase the concession area by 37%. The National also reported that DP World operates ports and terminals in 10 locations and has 35 freight forwarding offices employing 34,000 people across Africa, and operates on six continents with a global workforce of more than 125,000. Почему это важно
The extension and investment deepen DP World's role in Angola's trade infrastructure and, by the company's account, strengthen Luanda's position as a container gateway for West and Central Africa. The added capacity for two Post-Panamax vessels at once is presented by the company as supporting new shipping services and export competitiveness. The documents give no independent assessment of the expansion's economic impact.

The National reported the expansion will lift capacity to more than 1.2 million TEUs from a current 500,000 TEU, while other documents reported throughput of more than 350,000 TEUs and did not give a current capacity figure; capacity and throughput are different measures and the documents do not reconcile them.
