Two civilian merchant ships were attacked by drones and unmanned boats in Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea early on Oct 6, according to Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev. One ship sank and its crew is missing, with a search under way; the other caught fire, two people were injured and all 18 crew members were rescued by a Bulgarian vessel. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

Radev told reporters the attack was a serious violation of international law and warned that “if it is not ended early, this war will keep spreading,” according to Mainichi Shimbun. NHK News reported that he said the attack could not be tolerated. Yomiuri Shimbun reported Radev's statement that the attack took place about 110 kilometres offshore and came from the air and the sea. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

The documents differ on who was responsible. Mainichi Shimbun said the attacker was not clear and that the Russian government had not commented. Yomiuri Shimbun reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a video address on the night of Oct 6 that he had information from the Bulgarian navy that the attack was carried out by Russian forces. Mainichi Shimbun, citing the same address, reported Zelensky saying it was a Russian scheme to make the western Black Sea unnavigable. [ 1 , 3 ]

Local media identified the sunken ship as Togo-flagged, with the number of crew unknown and the search continuing. The other vessel was Palau-flagged, carried grain and was heading south with Turkish and Indian crew on board; the fire was extinguished after 18 crew were taken aboard a Bulgarian ship and two were injured. [ 1 , 3 ]

The attack is the latest in an intensifying exchange of strikes on shipping. Mainichi Shimbun reported that Russia has targeted Ukrainian grain transport ships and Ukraine has targeted tankers involved in Russian oil exports, with attacks on vessels and ports escalating on both sides. On Oct 5, a cargo ship was attacked by a drone off Romania and caught fire, killing two people. Russia's transport ministry said on Oct 6 that a Liberian-flagged oil tanker was attacked by unmanned boats and caught fire off Russia's Black Sea coast, with all 23 Indian crew members safe. [ 1 , 3 ]

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on X that attacks on civilian ships are unacceptable, Mainichi Shimbun reported. Bulgaria is a NATO member and allied with the United States and major European countries, the same outlet noted. [ 1 ]

Почему это важно

The Black Sea is a main corridor for Ukrainian grain shipments and borders NATO member states, so attacks on merchant shipping there carry direct consequences for global shipping and food trade. Both Moscow and Kyiv have escalated strikes on ships and ports linked to each other's exports, and the attack on a NATO member's economic zone raises the risk of wider spillover.
