Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold a series of international telephone calls on October 7, his birthday, TASS, Vedomosti and RBC reported. Peskov said a birthday is always a very personal holiday and that the main thing for the president is that all his relatives and close ones congratulate him, like all ordinary people. He added that for the president it is rarely a completely festive day. He also said other events are planned in the head of state’s schedule and that the Kremlin will report details later. [ 2 ]
Vedomosti reported that Putin will turn 74 on October 7 and that it will be his 22nd birthday as president of Russia. On his previous birthday, he had received about 40 greetings by 17:00, according to his aide Yuri Ushakov. Those greetings included ones from Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other world leaders. [ 2 ]
Later on October 6, TASS reported that Putin would hold a series of telephone conversations with foreign leaders on his birthday. RBC, citing Ushakov, said foreign leaders want to congratulate Putin and that he will hold a series of calls with them. Vedomosti also reported that Putin would hold telephone talks with foreign leaders on his birthday. [ 5 , 6 , 7 ]
The documents did not name any of this year’s callers or specify what other events are planned. TASS and RIA Novosti focused their headlines on Peskov’s description of the plans and of what is most important to Putin on his birthday. RBC summarised the planned calls and other events, and later cited Ushakov. Vedomosti provided details about Putin’s age and past birthday greetings. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 ]
Почему это важно
The announcement is a scheduling matter from the Kremlin, but contacts involving the Russian president on his birthday are likely to be noted outside Russia. The documents name no participants and describe no policy agenda, so the stated significance is limited to the plans themselves.
