Apple has co-developed a line of smart home devices with LG, which will sell them under its own brand, according to a Bloomberg report covered by three tech outlets. The reported line-up includes a video doorbell, a smart thermostat, a smart deadbolt lock, indoor and outdoor security cameras and a floodlight camera. LG is handling manufacturing and product support, the reports said. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
LG has sought regulatory approval for the devices in recent weeks, including with the US Federal Communications Commission and UL Solutions, a product certification company, Bloomberg reported. Filings with both organisations list product names, specifications, features and drawings, according to 9to5Mac, including the LG Video Doorbell Wired, LG Floodlight Cam, LG Outdoor Cam Plug-In, LG Indoor Cam Plug-In, LG Smart Deadbolt Lock, LG Smart Thermostat and LG Temperature Sensor. The Verge noted an “LG Smart Deadbolt Lock” listing in the FCC database. [ 1 , 2 ]
The accessories are intended to complement Apple's upcoming smart home hub and amount to what Bloomberg called “a formal reboot of HomeKit.” Apple is expected to introduce the hub at an event next week, where it may also reveal an updated Apple TV and a new HomePod mini. The Verge reported the event is expected on October 13th and that the hub is a Siri AI-enabled device with a six-inch display that can be mounted on a wall or placed on a table. The LG-branded accessories, however, are not expected to reach consumers for at least a few more months, Bloomberg said. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
Several of the devices will reportedly support the smart home protocols Thread and Matter, and the door lock will include an ultra-wideband feature that could unlock automatically as a user approaches, according to Bloomberg. Engadget noted the effort marks a shift for LG, which has been known for appliances and large electronics rather than smart home products, and said LG has previously partnered with Apple by offering Apple software on its smart TVs, serving as a third-party monitor option for Macs and producing panels for the Studio Display and Studio Display XDR. [ 2 , 3 ]
All three accounts attribute the details to Bloomberg's report and do not say whether Apple or LG have commented. The documents give no launch date, pricing or sales markets for the accessories. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
Почему это важно
The reported arrangement lets Apple expand its smart home line-up without producing and supporting every accessory itself, while giving LG a route into connected home hardware beyond its appliance business. For buyers, the products would tie Apple's home software to LG-branded devices. All three reports trace back to one Bloomberg report, so the details remain unconfirmed by Apple or LG.
