A Delta Air Lines plane taxiing for takeoff struck an Air Canada jet with its left wingtip at Los Angeles International Airport on Tuesday morning. The Federal Aviation Administration said the Delta wingtip clipped the horizontal stabilizer, a part of the tail, of the Air Canada aircraft. The FAA is investigating the incident, according to CNN. The Delta aircraft was an Airbus A350 bound for Tokyo with 275 passengers and 15 crew on board, a Delta spokesperson told Fox News. The Air Canada plane, a Boeing 777, had just arrived from Toronto and was being towed when the contact happened, the FAA said. The two outlets differ on the Air Canada flight's number: the New York Post identifies it as Flight 875, while CNN says it was Flight 785. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
CNN, citing air traffic control audio, reported that the Air Canada pilot asked a ground controller, “We just felt a shudder there. Is everything looking ok?”, and that the Delta pilot said, “It looks like we are having an issue with the wing tip.” Firefighters who checked the planes found no problems, according to the audio. No injuries were reported. [ 3 ]
Air Canada spokesperson Sean Davidson confirmed the incident to CNN and said the aircraft would be taken out of service for inspection and repairs. Delta's Airbus A350 is also being inspected by airline maintenance crews. “Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people, and we apologize to our customers for the experience and delay in their travels,” Delta said in a statement. The New York Post reported that LAX traffic was experiencing gate hold and taxi delays of 15 minutes or less, with arrival traffic facing airborne delays of 15 minutes or less, and said it remained unclear whether those delays were directly caused by the collision. Citing FlightAware, it said 26 flights originating at LAX were delayed and 2 cancelled as of 1 p.m. Tuesday. [ 1 ]
A passenger on another flight that had just landed, Jayson Lowe, wrote in a social media post that he saw from the window as his plane taxied to its arrival gate that a Delta A350 hit a parked Air Canada plane. CNN reported that photos of the aircraft posted on social media showed minor damage to the wingtip and tail. [ 1 , 3 ]

The collision involved two large international carriers at one of the busiest airports in the United States and triggered an FAA investigation. It adds to a run of ground-incident scrutiny at major hubs, and left both aircraft out of service for inspection. The documents give no further basis for wider consequences.
