The Emmy Awards will move to Amazon's Prime Video under a six-year deal announced Tuesday, ending a broadcast run that began in 1955 and the annual rotation among ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC. The first ceremony under the agreement will be the 79th Primetime Emmy Awards next September, The Associated Press reported. Prime Video will stream the show free of charge and no subscription will be required, a condition the Television Academy said it set from the start. [ 1 , 3 , 4 , 7 ]

Television Academy chair Cris Abrego told the AP that continuity was “a big part of what we’re looking for because the rotating part of it basically meant in many ways that we were starting over every year.” In a statement quoted by NBC News and CNN, he said “Television has never been more global, and the Emmys should be a celebration that the world can share.” Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, told The Seattle Times the aim was to make it “a global event” and that the company hoped the partnership would last more than six years. Financial terms were not disclosed, according to NBC News, The Seattle Times and TechCrunch, though Engadget, citing Deadline, reported Amazon is paying between $20 million and $25 million a year for the main ceremony rights. The shift comes as streaming has taken a larger share of viewing. NBC News cited Nielsen statistics showing 49% of all US television viewing in July was on a streaming platform, compared with 19.5% on broadcast networks. The most recent Emmys telecast, on NBC on Sept. 14, drew 6.8 million viewers, down about 10% from the 7.59 million who watched the prior year's ceremony on CBS, according to NBC News, TechCrunch and CNN. TechCrunch noted the figure remained above the telecast's all-time low of 4.3 million in January 2024. [ 1 , 3 , 6 , 7 ]

Other awards shows have made similar moves. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said last year that YouTube would stream the Oscars starting in 2029, after its deal with ABC ends, and Netflix has carried the Screen Actors Guild Awards since 2024, according to TechCrunch and CNN. CNN also reported that Disney will carry the Grammy Awards across ABC, Hulu and Disney+ starting next year. Engadget said the Emmys will be the first major entertainment awards ceremony to be broadcast exclusively on a streaming service. [ 3 , 5 , 6 , 7 ]

Engadget reported that Prime Video may offer other programming from the Television Academy, such as the Hall of Fame ceremony, and that it is not yet clear where viewers will watch the Creative Arts Emmys going forward. The documents differ on the size of the international audience: NBC News and CNN said more than 200 countries, while Engadget and TechCrunch said more than 240 countries and territories. Почему это важно

The deal removes television's most prominent awards show from broadcast networks, which have carried it since 1955, and follows the Oscars' move to YouTube in 2029 and Netflix's streaming of the SAG Awards since 2024. It gives Prime Video a marquee live event as streaming platforms compete for viewers, and puts the ceremony in front of audiences Amazon and the Television Academy say number in the hundreds of millions across more than 200 countries.
