Takaichi Sanae, Japan's prime minister, asked U.S. President Donald Trump at last month's U.S.-Japan summit to help arrange a Japan-North Korea summit if a U.S.-North Korea summit takes place, Japanese media reported on Oct. 7. According to the Asahi Shimbun, Takaichi disclosed the request the previous day at the prime minister's office while meeting families of Japanese abducted by North Korea. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]

Takaichi asked Trump to tell Kim Jong Un, the North Korean leader, that she wants to meet him so she can discuss the abductions issue directly, Asahi said. The reports said Takaichi has repeatedly stated since taking office that she intends to hold a summit with Kim to resolve the abductions issue. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]

The meeting was attended by Yokota Takuya, brother of Megumi Yokota, who was abducted in 1977, other family members and lawmakers from the bipartisan parliamentary league for the rescue of abductees, who reported on their visit to the United States last month. Kato Katsunobu, a league member, told reporters afterwards that Takaichi said she had been assured of “strong support” on the abduction issue at the U.S.-Japan summit. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]

A Newsis photo caption said Trump and Takaichi met on Sept. 22 at U.N. headquarters in New York, on the occasion of the U.N. General Assembly. The other documents describe the meeting only as a summit held last month in the United States. [ 5 ]

Separately, Japan's foreign ministry protested to China after China's foreign ministry referred to Takaichi by name without her title at an official briefing, according to Yonhap, Seoul Economic Daily and Kyunghyang Shinmun. Kitamura Toshihiro, Japan's foreign press secretary, said it is a matter of international courtesy to show respect to the leader of a country even when positions differ, Jiji Press reported. [ 1 , 3 , 4 ]

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun used the name “Takaichi Sanae” without the title on Sept. 30 while answering a question about Japan's discussions on possessing nuclear weapons and nuclear-powered submarines, the reports said. The transcript later posted on the Chinese foreign ministry's website also lacked the title, which the reports said suggested it was not a slip of the tongue. Kyunghyang Shinmun said China-Japan relations had worsened since Takaichi's “Taiwan contingency” remark last year and interpreted the naming as an expression of Chinese displeasure. [ 1 , 3 , 4 ]

Почему это важно

The reports describe a request rather than an agreed summit, so any Tokyo-Pyongyang meeting remains conditional on a U.S.-North Korea summit that the documents do not say has been arranged. If it happens, it would create a direct channel on the abductions issue that Takaichi has made a priority since taking office. The parallel protest to China, reported by official and business outlets, points to friction in Japan-China relations.
