South Korean singer-YouTuber sentenced to 25 years over teenage daughter's death

A singer and YouTuber in their 40s was sentenced to 25 years in prison on October 8 over the death of a teenage daughter, Yonhap, Newsis and Seoul Shinmun reported. Criminal Division 1 of the Changwon District Court's Jinju branch, presided over by Judge Lee Seung-il, handed down the sentence at the trial of the defendant, identified only as A, who had been indicted while in detention on charges including murder. A was charged with beating the daughter, who was on leave from school, at a home in Namhae County in September last year and leaving her in a vehicle, resulting in her death. Newsis gave the date as September 19 and reported that A and the daughter were working together renting out broadcasting equipment at the time, and that A assaulted her for not properly carrying out tasks A had assigned. According to Yonhap and Seoul Shinmun, the court found that A injured the victim and caused burns over her whole body. Newsis quoted the court as saying A beat the daughter and poured hot water on her, causing burns. The court said A believed the victim had failed to handle work A had ordered or that A had been embarrassed, but that these reasons were far too trivial to explain the cruel treatment of the daughter. The court also said A did not properly acknowledge wrongdoing and was evading responsibility. Newsis reported that the court noted A had previously been fined for a similar offence and had committed the same crime again, which it said made the offence serious. The court said that, among other circumstances, it was difficult to view the crime as having been carefully planned in advance, and that it set the sentence after weighing these factors together.
