Fukushima's Futaba to lift evacuation order for two districts in December
Коротко
Two districts in Fukushima Prefecture's Futaba Town are expected to have their evacuation orders lifted around December, which would let residents live there again after about 15 years and 9 months. It would be the first lifting in a “specified return residence zone”, the areas the government decontaminates for people who want to return inside the difficult-to-return zone around the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. Reconstruction Minister Hosono said the government will work with relevant ministries toward a final decision.

Two districts in Fukushima Prefecture's Futaba Town are expected to have their evacuation orders lifted around December, Sankei Shimbun and Tokyo Shimbun reported. Sankei Shimbun said it would be the first lifting in a “specified return residence zone” — areas inside the difficult-to-return zone around the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant that the government decontaminates for residents who wish to return — since the government designated such zones in six municipalities in the prefecture. Residents would be able to live in the area again after about 15 years and 9 months, the outlet reported. [ 1 , 2 ]
Citing the town, Sankei Shimbun said the two districts are Mitsuaza and Hatori, two of nine specified return residence zones in the town, covering about 113 hectares in total. About 90 percent of decontamination there is expected to be completed within the year, the outlet reported. A town official said the town wants to work with the national government so that it can meet residents' wish to return to their hometown as soon as possible, according to Sankei Shimbun. [ 1 ]
On the government side, Reconstruction Minister Hosono said the government will coordinate with relevant ministries and other bodies toward a final decision, NHK News reported, referring to the town's moves to adjust for the lifting of evacuation orders in part of the specified return residence zone. Sankei Shimbun reported that the government is promoting decontamination and the development of living conditions to enable residents who wish to return during the 2020s. [ 1 , 3 ]
Sankei Shimbun reported that Futaba Town said last year it aimed to lift the designation in three districts within fiscal 2026, and that one remaining district still targets lifting by the end of March next year given the state of infrastructure restoration. The documents do not specify the exact date of the December lifting or say how many residents plan to return. [ 1 ]
Почему это важно
The lifting would be the first in a specified return residence zone that the government has set up in six Fukushima municipalities, making it a test of the decontamination-and-return model for areas evacuated after the 2011 nuclear accident. It concerns a small area and a limited number of residents, and the documents give no figures on how many people plan to move back.
