Busan city said on Oct 6 that DataSphera, a youth company based in the city, has launched a commercial digital product passport (DPP) service, which the city described as the first such commercialization in South Korea. The company also signed a supply contract with Italian clothing company Dolce & Gabbana, according to the announcement, which the official Yonhap news agency and several business outlets reported. [ 4 , 5 , 7 ]

A digital product passport links a physical product to digital information, creating a unique digital identity for each item and managing data on production, distribution, use, repair and recycling. It is an EU system for products imported and distributed in the bloc, and the EU is phasing in mandatory application by product category. Two business outlets said the scope starts with steel in 2026, expands in 2027 to batteries, textiles, clothing, aluminium and furniture, and in 2029 to mattresses and electronics; the official news agency said only that mandatory application by category is being pursued in phases from this year. [ 4 , 5 , 7 ]

DataSphera ran a competitive technical proof from last year with Dolce & Gabbana and companies from various countries, and signed the final supply contract on April 9, one business outlet reported; another outlet said the first supply contract was signed in April. The city said the commercialization is significant because a regional company has applied technology that can respond to EU product regulation in an actual market. No contract terms have been disclosed in the documents. [ 4 , 5 , 7 ]

The company grew with technology transfer and other support from the KAIST Auto-ID Lab Busan Innovation Research Institute, an international joint research institute established jointly by Busan city and KAIST and attracted by the city in 2022, according to Yonhap and the business outlets. One outlet said DataSphera was founded in 2024 and is based in Haeundae district, Busan, and that the institute is an international joint research laboratory of the standards body GS1, involving laboratories of MIT, ETH Zurich and Cambridge University as well as global logistics companies. [ 4 , 5 , 7 ]

In July the company released a product certified by GDST, the international seafood traceability standards body, according to the city and a business outlet. The city also pointed to a pilot Arctic route voyage from Busan port to Rotterdam in the Netherlands, which it said was completed successfully on Sept 12, as something that could support local companies' entry into the European market amid growing interest in logistics and trade with Europe. Busan said it plans to combine DPP technology with artificial intelligence for supply chain optimization and tailored services. Mayor Jeon Jae-soo said the commercialization and the international contract were the result of the local youth company's “excellent artificial intelligence technology and spirit of challenge,” and said the city would actively support AI integration into regional industry and technology startups in cooperation with local universities. [ 4 , 5 ]

One tier-1 business outlet carried a headline reporting the first domestic commercialization of a digital product passport by a Busan youth company, but its article text dealt with the National Assembly's audit of the Supreme Court and a dispute over a Supreme Court justice appointment, not with the Busan launch. Three items from another business outlet and one from a third reported the launch or the Dolce & Gabbana contract in headlines only. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 6 , 8 ]

Почему это важно

The EU is phasing in mandatory digital product passports by product category, so a commercial service that can generate and manage that data gives Busan-area exporters a route into that market. The city presented the launch and the Dolce & Gabbana contract as evidence that its support for young local companies and their artificial intelligence technology can translate into international sales.
