Kwon Oh-eul, South Korea's minister of patriots and veterans affairs, complained of dizziness while undergoing a National Assembly audit on October 6 and was taken to Jungang Veterans Hospital in Gangdong district, Seoul, according to the veterans ministry and domestic outlets. Yonhap reported that Kwon appeared as a government witness at the Political Affairs Committee audit of his ministry from about 10:00, appeared much as usual, and made no mention of any health problem when the morning session ended. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

According to Yonhap, during a recess after the morning questioning Kwon told staff that something seemed wrong with his health, and the ministry asked the National Assembly for its understanding and moved him to hospital. The ministry said in a media notice at about 15:00 that Kwon had not been feeling well since the morning, that attending the afternoon audit would be difficult, and that he was being treated at Jungang Veterans Hospital, adding that details needed further confirmation. Yonhap reported his condition was not serious enough to require an ambulance, and said Vice Minister Kang Yoon-jin would attend the afternoon audit in his place. [ 3 ]

Chosun Ilbo reported that Kwon was not expected to attend the afternoon session and quoted a ministry official as saying that, as of then, attending was difficult; the portion of the official's remarks available in the document also referred to stroke-like symptoms. Asia Economy reported, citing a committee official, that Kwon complained of dizziness after the morning session and that the afternoon audit, due to resume at 14:00, was postponed to about 15:00. [ 1 , 2 ]

The documents do not state a final decision on the minister's participation in the rest of the audit, and the ministry said his condition still required confirmation. [ 3 ]

Почему это важно

The audit of the veterans ministry is a scheduled scrutiny session, and the minister's absence means the deputy, Kang Yoon-jin, is expected to face questions in his place. Because the ministry says the nature of his condition still needs confirmation, it is not yet clear how long he may be away from his duties. Coverage is limited to the domestic political calendar, with no wider policy consequences reported so far.
