Microsoft announced the Surface Laptop Ultra, a 15-inch notebook built on NVIDIA's RTX Spark (N1X) chip, at an event in San Francisco on October 7 local time and began taking pre-orders, PC Watch and 4Gamer.net reported. PC Watch said sales start on October 16 in regions including Japan, while Mynavi News gave the same release date and a global starting price of $2,599. [ 1 , 5 , 6 ]
In Japan, PC Watch reported, the entry consumer model with an 18-core CPU, a 5,120-core GPU, 24GB of memory, 512GB of storage and Windows 11 Home costs ¥513,480. The top model, with a 20-core CPU, a 6,144-core GPU, 128GB of memory, 1TB of storage and Windows 11 Pro, costs ¥1,094,280 and is sold only through the Microsoft Store. Business and education models range from ¥478,800 to ¥990,800 before tax. Gigazine said the Japanese price is considerably higher than the overseas price of $2,599, which it put at about ¥410,000. 4Gamer.net described RTX Spark as an NVIDIA chip for Windows on Arm PCs that combines Arm CPU cores with a GPU on the same architecture as the GeForce RTX 50 series; Mynavi News and Gigazine said the GPU is a Blackwell RTX GPU. Memory is offered in 24GB, 32GB, 48GB, 64GB and 128GB versions. Microsoft claims up to 1 petaflop of AI performance and the ability to run AI models with more than 120 billion parameters locally. The 15-inch PixelSense Ultra touchscreen reaches up to 2,000 nits, and Mynavi News said it uses a Mini LED backlight. [ 2 , 4 , 5 , 6 ]
The laptop is under 18mm thick and weighs no more than about 2kg, with a new cooling system that gives up to 2.5 times the thermal capacity of the existing Surface Laptop. Storage can be replaced by the user. A new Magnetic Connect feature holds the charging cable to a USB Type-C port by magnet; Microsoft called it the first built-in magnetic USB-C charging in a laptop, Gigazine reported. Mynavi News listed three USB Type-C ports, USB Type-A, HDMI, an SD card reader and a 3.5mm audio jack, with output to up to three 4K displays. Sofmap began taking pre-orders on October 8, with release set for 21:00 on October 16, ASCII.jp reported. Microsoft also opened pre-orders for the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a developer machine priced at $5,999, sold only on Microsoft.com in the United States at the time of writing and shipping from November 2026, according to Gigazine. 4Gamer.net said the laptop is too expensive to buy as a gaming notebook and noted that ASUSTeK Computer and MSI announced RTX Spark laptops on October 8 Japan time without giving prices.
