Samsung Electronics has told employees in its semiconductor (DS) division the details of a special performance bonus to be paid around late March to early April next year, after the company's regular shareholders meeting, according to internal notices reported by Dong-A Ilbo, Seoul Economic Daily and Korea Economic Daily. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

Dong-A Ilbo reported the bonus is funded by 10.5% of the DS division's operating profit for this year, with 40% distributed across the whole division and 60% allocated according to business unit performance. It said the payout is made in Samsung Electronics shares after taxes and insurance are deducted, with the number of shares set at the closing price on the payment date and sales restricted for a period afterward. The report said the plan did not include a fallback for the case where the shareholders meeting fails to pass an agenda on paying with treasury shares. [ 1 ]

Seoul Economic Daily reported the sequence: the company will finalise this year's results and calculate the fund at the end of January, announce per-business-unit payment rates in early February, and pay after the regular shareholders meeting in late March. [ 2 ]

On eligibility, Seoul Economic Daily reported the bonus covers employees on the payroll as of December 31 this year and those on leave for childcare, pregnancy, military service or caregiving within 90 days. The Compound Semiconductor Solution (CSS) business team is excluded. For department-head level staff, payment ranges from 1.4 times the base for the top grade, covering the top 10%, to 1 times for the middle grade and 0.8 times for the lowest. Taxes are withheld first at the maximum rate of 45%, or 49.5% including local income tax, with any excess refunded, the paper said. [ 2 ]

Seoul Economic Daily estimated individual amounts using a one-month consensus of 366 trillion won for Samsung's full-year operating profit: a memory business department head at the top grade would receive about 524.6 million won before tax, and at the lowest grade about 319.7 million won. Korea Economic Daily's headline instead put memory bonuses at 750 million won per person, without further explanation in the text available. An industry official told Seoul Economic Daily that individual personnel evaluations now have a larger effect on bonuses because semiconductor results have grown to record levels. [ 2 , 3 ]

The outlets described the treatment of employees who moved between divisions differently. Dong-A Ilbo reported that staff who moved from other divisions into DS receive bonuses calculated on the months actually worked in DS, while Seoul Economic Daily said such employees are eligible only if their time in DS was longer than in the other division. Dong-A Ilbo also reported that the union at Samsung Electronics' 초기업노동조합 삼성전자지부 sent members guidance on expected bonus amounts after the notice. [ 1 , 2 ]

Why it matters

The notice shows how Samsung plans to distribute part of what the outlets describe as record-level semiconductor earnings to staff, making the details of timing, share-based payment and grade-based differentiation a subject of internal attention. The documents also indicate union involvement, suggesting compensation at the chip division remains a live labour issue. The reports are based on internal notices rather than company statements.

What local media are saying

Business mediaAll three documents are business outlets reporting from an internal company notice rather than a public statement. Dong-A Ilbo focused on the funding base, the share-based payout and union guidance to members; Seoul Economic Daily supplied the fullest schedule, eligibility rules, grade multipliers and tax treatment, plus estimates of individual amounts; Korea Economic Daily emphasised, in its headline, a per-person figure for memory bonuses and payment after next year's shareholders meeting, with little detail in the text available.
