Kakao Games officially launched Dokkaebiui Segye (도깨비의세계), a new 2.5D massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by Supercat (슈퍼캣), on October 8, the company said. Gamemeca described the title as developed by Supercat and serviced by Kakao Games. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]

The game is based on the intellectual property of the Naver web novel and webtoon Myeolgwi Sudojeon (멸귀수도전). It pairs 2D pixel-art characters with 3D backgrounds, a hybrid visual style that Inven and Gamemeca said delivers both a retro feel and a sense of three-dimensional space, with pixel art reflecting traditional Korean sentiment. Kyunghyang Games said the world draws on traditional Korean folk tales and that placing flat pixel-art characters in a three-dimensional space sets it apart from existing pixel-graphics games. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]

Gamemeca reported that the game has no fixed classes. Players combine 12 skill styles divided into four families: frontal firepower, distance and flow, variables and control, and protecting allies and the front line. Placing three skills of the same style activates an effect that triggers a distinct mechanic or strengthens an ultimate skill. [ 4 ]

According to Gamemeca, player-killing is excluded entirely in ordinary fields, and total rewards from field bosses grow as more players take part. Guild members can split roles to restore altars or hunt powerful monsters to build contribution. A competitive mode, Nakhwaui Jeonjang (낙화의 전장), pits three servers against each other in two-week cycles, but rewards rise when top players protect their allies, and points can be earned by killing monsters or contributing to objectives so that players who do not favour player-versus-player combat can take part. Gamemeca also reported an in-game AI chatbot, Myorong (묘롱), that gives play tips and organises guild activity data, an option to register a character as a stand-in that carries out guild content, and an offline mode allowing up to eight hours of automatic hunting a day. [ 4 ]

To mark the launch, Kakao Games is running a 28-day special attendance event with daily log-in rewards and a hero blessing selection box as the final reward, along with drops events on the streaming platforms Chzzk (치지직) and SOOP that give in-game coupons to viewers who watch Dokkaebiui Segye broadcasts for a set time. Kyunghyang Games reported further promotions: a coupon discount on Google Play Games, a Google Play Points booster, KakaoPay point-back offers, payment discounts for KT and LG Uplus users, and tie-ins using Google gift codes and Culture Cash (컬쳐캐쉬), with conditions posted on the official community. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]

Cha Myeong-su (차명수), head of the business division at Kakao Games, said the company had drawn heavily on users' opinions while preparing the game and would keep listening to feedback from actual play after launch and reflect it in the service so that it can be enjoyed for a long time. [ 1 , 4 ]

Why it matters

The launch adds a new MMORPG built on a Naver web novel and webtoon property to Kakao Games' line-up, and it was covered by Yonhap and three games outlets. Gamemeca reported that the game excludes player-killing from ordinary fields and builds its server competition around cooperation.
