🇰🇷 South Korea, Seoul 06:51 Autos Business11 Tech2 Official updated 6 h ago first reported by 한국경제

Version 3: This version adds Kyunghyang Shinmun's critical assessment that Genesis entered the hybrid market late and offers a regular hybrid rather than a plug-in hybrid, plus a reported price comparison with a comparable Lexus SUV whose details could not be verified; the confirmed launch facts, prices and specifications are unchanged.

In short

Genesis launched the GV80 Hybrid, its first hybrid model, in Korea on Oct. 6 at 7,680만원 based on the 5% individual consumption tax. The company said the 2.5-litre turbo hybrid produces a combined 352 PS, about 16% more than the GV80 2.5 turbo, and returns 12 km per litre, about 29% better. Kyunghyang Shinmun reported the launch drew criticism that Hyundai Motor Group's premium brand has entered the hybrid market late, and that it offers a regular hybrid rather than a plug-in hybrid.

Genesis, the luxury brand of Hyundai Motor Group, launched its first hybrid model, the GV80 Hybrid, in Korea on Oct. 6 and began sales the same day, the company said. The semi-large SUV is priced at 7,680만원 based on the 5% individual consumption tax, according to Asia Economy, Yonhap, Electronic Times, Maeil Business, Chosun Ilbo, Seoul Economic Daily, Kyunghyang Shinmun and CBS NoCut News. Genesis also released model-year updates of the GV80 at 6,985만원 and the GV80 Coupe at 8,270만원. [ 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 14 ]

The price came in below earlier industry expectations. Kukmin Ilbo reported on Oct. 4 that the model would be priced in the 70-million-won range, and Chosun Ilbo and Dong-A Ilbo said the figure was lower than the 80-million-won range parts of the industry had anticipated, attributing it to a push to establish the model in the hybrid market and expand sales. Chosun Ilbo reported on Oct. 4 that the domestic launch was scheduled for next month, while Dong-A Ilbo said the car would go on sale on Oct. 6; Genesis announced the launch on Oct. 6. The GV80 Hybrid combines a 2.5-litre turbo engine with a starter-generator motor (P1) and a 59.1 kW drive and regenerative-braking motor (P2) in a parallel layout, for combined output of 352 PS, about 16% more than the 304 PS of the GV80 2.5 turbo, the company said. Combined fuel economy is 12 km per litre for the 19-inch, two-wheel-drive, five-seat version, about 29% better, and with a 76-litre fuel tank the car can travel about 912 km on one fill, according to the company. Genesis said acceleration from standstill to 100 km/h takes about 7.1 seconds under the company's own testing. [ 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 11 , 12 , 14 ]

Genesis said the model uses a new seven-speed rear-wheel-drive transmission derived from the 3.5 turbo's eight-speed unit, and the Hyundai Motor Group's first water-cooled hybrid battery system, which the company said raises maximum discharge output and widens the motor's operating range. The car uses electric power up to about 30 km/h from a standstill, and offers a 3.6 kW vehicle-to-load outlet, a stay mode that runs air conditioning and media without the engine, and the group's first Hybrid Terrain Performance system on all-wheel-drive versions, the company said. It also carries Pedal Misoperation Safety Assist, which limits power and applies emergency braking if the accelerator is pressed by mistake while stopped. [ 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 11 , 12 , 14 ]

“GV80 Hybrid is Genesis's first hybrid, securing strong power performance and excellent efficiency while realising electric-vehicle-level quietness,” Lee Si-hyeok, head of the Genesis business division, said, according to Yonhap, Electronic Times, Seoul Economic Daily and CBS NoCut News. He added that Genesis would continue to offer various powertrain experiences and respond flexibly to market changes. [ 6 , 7 , 11 , 14 ]

Electronic Times said the launch opens a direct contest with imported premium brands such as BMW's X5 and Lexus's RX, which it said have led Korea's large eco-friendly SUV segment. Kyunghyang Shinmun reported that the launch also drew assessments that Hyundai Motor Group's electrification strategy has retreated and that Genesis's entry into the hybrid market is late, noting that Lexus, BMW and Mercedes-Benz already have hybrid and plug-in hybrid line-ups, and that the GV80 Hybrid is a regular hybrid rather than a plug-in hybrid. [ 7 , 12 ]

Why it matters

The GV80 Hybrid is Genesis's first hybrid and the first Hyundai Motor Group hybrid with a water-cooled battery system, making its launch a test of the brand in Korea's premium hybrid segment. Electronic Times said it opens a direct contest with imported premium SUVs that have led that segment, while Kyunghyang Shinmun said Genesis arrives after Lexus, BMW and Mercedes-Benz already field hybrid and plug-in hybrid line-ups. The documents give no basis for effects outside Korea.

Still unclear

  • Whether the lower-than-expected price is a deliberate strategy to win volume in the hybrid segment. Chosun Ilbo and Dong-A Ilbo attribute this reading to industry analysts and observers, not to Genesis, and the company's announcement does not discuss its pricing rationale.
  • How the GV80 Hybrid will fare against imported premium SUVs. Electronic Times frames the launch as a head-on contest with models such as BMW's X5 and Lexus's RX, and Kyunghyang Shinmun notes those brands already have hybrid and plug-in hybrid line-ups, but the documents contain no sales data or targets.
  • Whether the launch timing reported before Oct. 6 was correct. Chosun Ilbo said on Oct. 4 that the domestic launch was scheduled for next month, while Dong-A Ilbo said the car would go on sale on Oct. 6; Genesis announced the launch on Oct. 6 and the documents do not explain the earlier discrepancy.
  • A reported price comparison with a comparable Lexus SUV. Korea Economic Daily's headline referred to a Genesis G80 hybrid and a price 1,100만원 below a comparable Lexus SUV, but the article text carried other stories and the figure could not be checked; a Newsis article under a GV80 Hybrid headline similarly contained an unrelated police investigation story.
