Zhuhai's border checkpoints recorded more than 2.24 million inbound and outbound passenger trips in the first three days of the National Day holiday, up about 5% year on year, according to the Zhuhai General Station of Exit and Entry Frontier Inspection, as reported by CLS, Jiemian and 36Kr. Inbound and outbound transport vehicles, vessels and aircraft totalled 130,000 over the same period, up about 10%. [ 1 , 3 , 4 ]
Jiemian gave a port-by-port breakdown: about 389,000 crossings at Hengqin, up about 19% year on year, and about 359,000 at Qingmao, up about 8%, while Gongbei handled 1.14 million. The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Zhuhai highway port recorded about 318,000 crossings, up about 8%, with 45,000 Hong Kong and Macau vehicles travelling northbound, up more than 12%, and more than 1,400 Guangdong vehicles travelling southbound. [ 3 ]
Jiemian reported that cross-border passenger flows at the Zhuhai-Hong Kong and Zhuhai-Macao ports rose across the three days, reaching 790,000 on 3 October. Citing CCTV News, it attributed the traffic to holiday events that drew crowds to commercial districts and attractions in Greater Bay Area cities, together with measures including the “two vehicles northbound” scheme and smart customs clearance, which it said fuelled two-way cross-border travel by mainland residents heading to Hong Kong and Macau and by Hong Kong and Macau residents heading north for shopping. [ 3 ]
Jiemian also carried an advisory from the border inspection authorities: with checkpoints crowded during the holiday, travellers were advised to follow real-time passenger flow information through the “Zhuhai border inspection” public account and to choose their checkpoint and timing to avoid peak periods. Why it matters
The figures give a holiday-period reading on how many people are moving between the mainland and Hong Kong and Macau through Zhuhai, a main land crossing point. Jiemian attributed the volumes to holiday events in Greater Bay Area cities and to measures such as the “two vehicles northbound” scheme and smart customs clearance. The documents do not give a full-holiday forecast or any official assessment of the numbers beyond the year-on-year comparison.
