Russia's Defence Ministry said on Sunday that units of its “North” grouping are tightening an encirclement of Ukrainian formations in northeastern Kharkiv region and expanding an outer zone of control. In the statement, carried in full by Interfax and summarised in bulletins by RIA Novosti and TASS, the ministry said fighting for the settlements of Varvarka, Nikolaevka, Lobanovka and Reznikovo was under way and that encircled Ukrainian units were being destroyed near Rublenoye, Nefedovka, Kupino and Chyornoye. [ 1 , 2 , 6 ]
According to the same statement, combat is taking place in the areas of Prikolotnoye and Annopolya as the outer control zone is widened, with fire strikes on Berezhnoye, Podsredneye, Kurgannoye and Maly Burluk. The ministry said forces and equipment of two mechanised brigades, a motorised infantry brigade and an assault regiment of the Ukrainian army were hit near Sosnovka, Kupino, Pioner, Odnorobovka and Podsredneye, and that strikes were carried out in Sumy region on an airmobile brigade and a Ukrainian border guard detachment near Kiyanitsa, Vakalovshchina and Luzhki. [ 6 , 7 ]
The ministry put Ukrainian losses inside the encirclement over the past 24 hours at more than 35 servicemen, and said a drone control point was destroyed. RIA Novosti's headline on the same figure said Ukrainian forces in the ring lost 35 fighters in the day. Across the “North” grouping's area of responsibility, the ministry reported total Ukrainian losses of more than 235 servicemen, one armoured personnel carrier, three armoured combat vehicles, 22 vehicles, two field artillery guns and a radar station. [ 4 , 5 , 6 ]
The documents contain no comment from the Ukrainian side and no independent confirmation of the ministry's account, and they do not say how many Ukrainian troops are inside the reported encirclement. All figures and descriptions of the fighting come from the Russian Defence Ministry as reported by RIA Novosti, TASS and Interfax. [ 6 ]
Why it matters
The statements come only from Russia's Defence Ministry as relayed by state and business wire outlets, and the documents carry no Ukrainian response or independent verification, so the extent of any encirclement cannot be assessed from the coverage. If the reported advance holds, it would extend Russian control in northeastern Kharkiv region and add pressure along the Sumy border area, which the same statement says was struck.
