Коротко

Actor Yoo Hae-jin will not attend the 35th Buil Film Awards on Oct. 7 in Busan, even though he is nominated for best actor for a different film, ‘The Man Who Lives with the King’, his agency VAST Entertainment said. With the decision, all of Yoo's scheduled official appearances in Busan have been cancelled, after events for the film ‘Assassins’ at the Busan International Film Festival were also called off. The backdrop is the historical-distortion controversy over ‘Assassins’, based on the 1974 shooting of Yuk Young-soo, and the agency has warned of a strong response to threats and false information.

Actor Yoo Hae-jin will not attend the 35th Buil Film Awards, his agency VAST Entertainment said on Oct. 6, according to Maeil Business and Hankook Ilbo. Yoo had been due at the ceremony on Oct. 7 at the Signiel Busan Grand Ballroom, Maeil Business reported. With the decision, all of his scheduled official appearances in Busan have been cancelled, the reports said. Seoul Shinmun, Newsis, Seoul Economic Daily and Chosun Ilbo also reported the cancellation. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ]

Yoo was nominated for best actor for ‘The Man Who Lives with the King’, a film unconnected to the controversy, competing against Koo Kyo-hwan for ‘If We’, Lee Byung-hun for ‘I Can't Help It’, Park Ji-hoon for ‘The Man Who Lives with the King’ and Zo In-sung for ‘Hope’, according to Maeil Business and Hankook Ilbo. Maeil Business noted that the nomination was for a different work than the disputed ‘Assassins’. The agency told Maeil Business it had decided after deliberation not to attend. [ 1 , 2 , 4 , 5 ]

The backdrop is the controversy over ‘Assassins’. According to Maeil Business and Hankook Ilbo, the film, directed by Hur Jin-ho, is based on the shooting of then-first lady Yuk Young-soo at an Aug. 15, 1974 ceremony, and traces suspicions and possible backers around the case. Hankook Ilbo said the film was released on Sept. 23 and that criticism over historical distortion followed. Hankook Ilbo also reported that production company Hi Media Corp cancelled its attendance at the Busan International Film Festival opening ceremony and an Oct. 7 outdoor stage greeting, saying it considered the safety of audiences and attendees and the smooth running of the event. [ 1 , 2 ]

Criticism has moved from the film to its lead actor. Maeil Business reported that on Oct. 4 conservative civic groups held a rally in front of a house identified as Yoo's home in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, demanding that screenings stop and that the production and cast apologise. A rally urging companies to cancel advertising contracts with Yoo was also announced, the outlet said. [ 1 ]

On Oct. 5, VAST Entertainment said it views the creation and spread of false information, malicious personal attacks and insults, as well as any intrusion into the actor's private life, threats to his safety and damage to his reputation, as very serious, and that it will take all possible measures, according to Maeil Business and Hankook Ilbo. Newsis and Seoul Economic Daily also reported the agency's strong-response stance. [ 1 , 2 , 4 , 5 ]

Maeil Business reported that the dispute has also entered politics: it said the People Power Party has moved to ask the Singapore International Film Festival, which selected ‘Assassins’ as its opening film, to cancel the screening, and that questions have been raised about funding from a state-run bank that invested in the production and about portal film ratings. No other document in this set reports those items. [ 1 ]

The Buil Film Awards is due to be held on Oct. 7 at 4:30 p.m. at the Signiel Busan Grand Ballroom. Maeil Business reported that ‘I Can't Help It’ has the most nominations with nine categories, followed by Na Hong-jin's ‘Hope’ with eight, and that best picture nominees include ‘Third Year, Second Semester’, ‘People and Meat’, ‘Master of the World’, ‘I Can't Help It’ and ‘Hope’. Почему это важно

The dispute has moved from film criticism to an actor's public schedule and safety, with protests outside his home and an agency warning of legal action, according to Maeil Business. Maeil Business also reports political involvement, including a move to ask the Singapore International Film Festival to withdraw ‘Assassins’ and questions about a state-run bank investment and portal ratings. How far the fallout spreads to other cast members, festivals and advertisers is not settled in the documents.

Пока неясно

  • Whether the Buil Film Awards cancellation is a direct result of the ‘Assassins’ controversy.
