Korail signs agreement with Daejeon district office, Woosong University for rail-themed school program

Korea Railroad Corp. (Korail) said on Oct. 6 that it signed a memorandum of understanding with the Daejeon Dong-gu Office and Woosong University to operate "Korail Ieum School." Yonhap reported that the signing took place at Korail's headquarters in Daejeon; Newsis said only that an agreement was concluded. [ 1 , 2 ]
Ieum School is described by both outlets as a community-focused Korail social contribution project that provides elementary students with free experiential education and care programs based on railways. Under the agreement, Korail is to oversee program operation including the development of rail education content and instructor training. The Dong-gu Office is to find sources of care demand and coordinate between institutions, and Woosong University is to train students from rail-related departments as instructors and handle on-site classes. Korail said the program ran a course for lower elementary grades last year and this year extended the target to upper grades with age-specific teaching. Yonhap said this year's expansion was in line with the government's "온동네 초등돌봄" elementary care policy. Both outlets reported that next year Korail plans to expand the program to the Jeonnam-Gwangju region, drawing on experience from Daejeon and Gyeonggi Province, and to run pilot teaching with rail departments at local universities. Korail president Kim Tae-seung said the company would widen the value of railways — which he said have connected people and regions — into education and care and convey learning and experiences to children, according to both outlets. Newsis also quoted him saying Korail would look for various cooperation measures with the local community so that children can grow into representative local talent as future railway customers and managers.
