Members of Cornell University's Faculty Council have submitted a resolution of no confidence in President Michael Kotlikoff and the university administration, criticising how it handled a sexual assault case first reported two years ago. Yonhap and Kyunghyang Shinmun, both citing CNN and The New York Times, reported that the resolution was filed on the evening of Oct. 5. The Faculty Council is Cornell's main legislative advisory and review body, made up of more than 75 faculty representatives. [ 1 , 3 ]

The draft resolution states that the council judges the university administration incapable of effectively responding to the continuing sexual violence crisis at Cornell, according to the two reports. About 40 council members have expressed support, and the resolution is due to be put to a plenary meeting on Oct. 14. Arianna Kim, a music professor on the council, told The New York Times that the move made clear the faculty's rejection of the leadership and amounted to saying it was effectively unfit to run the university. [ 1 , 3 ]

Kyunghyang Shinmun reported that Cornell's board of trustees special committee said in a statement that it had appointed former U.S. Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates to lead an independent review of the university's sexual violence prevention and response systems. The team will examine whether Cornell followed its own rules and procedures at the time and whether there were failings in its initial response, the paper reported. Yonhap reported that Cornell and its leadership had promised to accept an independent outside investigation. [ 1 , 3 ]

A former Cornell student identified as Jane Doe says she was sexually assaulted by seven male students on campus in October 2024 and has recently filed a civil lawsuit against the university and the alleged perpetrators, according to all three reports. She says she reported the incident to the university and to prosecutors at the time, but that it did not lead to criminal charges and that the alleged perpetrators were not properly punished. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

Newsis, citing AP, reported that the prosecutor with jurisdiction over the case decided not to indict, that Cornell expelled two of the named male students and gave the remaining five light disciplinary measures, and that New York State recently decided to reinvestigate through a special prosecutor. It also reported that students protested on campus on Oct. 5 over the university's handling of the case. Members of the campus community have strongly objected, saying the university did not properly investigate the case, according to Yonhap and Kyunghyang Shinmun. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

Почему это важно

The case puts the leadership of a major U.S. university under pressure from its own faculty and students over how it handled allegations of sexual violence, and it has drawn a state-level reinvestigation. A no-confidence vote on Oct. 14 would test whether the administration can hold its position while an outside review is under way.
