MTS builds geopositioning network for Yandex autonomous transport on four highways
Версия 2: New technical details emerged in a tech outlet’s report: the network uses GNSS RTK positioning with reference stations on MTS telecom infrastructure, and expansion is planned to Novorossiysk by the end of 2026, Tyumen by 2028 and million-plus cities by 2030, along with MTS’s claim that the infrastructure is the first of its kind in Russia.
Коротко
MTS has built a high-precision geopositioning infrastructure for managing Yandex’s autonomous transport, TASS and CNews reported, launched on the M-11 “Neva”, M4 “Don”, M-12 “Vostok” and Central Ring Road highways and in Moscow, St Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan and Voronezh. CNews reported the network uses GNSS RTK technology, with satellite coordinates corrected to 2–5 cm, and that it is to expand to Novorossiysk by the end of 2026 and Tyumen by 2028.

MTS has built a high-precision geopositioning infrastructure for managing Yandex’s autonomous transport, with CNews describing it as the first such network in Russia. TASS reported the system is launched on four federal highways — the M-11 “Neva”, M4 “Don”, M-12 “Vostok” and the Central Ring Road — and in Moscow, St Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan and Voronezh. RIA Novosti reported only that MTS built geopositioning infrastructure for autonomous transport. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
CNews reported the system is running on the M4 as far as Voronezh and on the M12 as far as Kazan. According to the same report, the infrastructure is to reach Novorossiysk on the M4 by the end of 2026 and Tyumen on the M12 by 2028, while the project, launched in 2025, also provides for a geopositioning network in all Russian million-plus cities and key logistics centres by 2030. [ 3 ]
On the technology, CNews reported that MTS uses GNSS RTK, correcting satellite coordinates from Glonass, GPS, Galileo and Beidou — accurate to 5–15 metres — to 2–5 centimetres using mathematical models and a ground network of reference stations. Each station, the report said, is installed on MTS telecom infrastructure and consists of a receiver with a phased antenna for GNSS signals. Algorithms matching centimetre coordinates with high-precision digital road maps allow a vehicle to orient itself in zero visibility, and onboard inertial navigation systems allow centimetre accuracy even without communications, according to the report. MTS said it ensures the network’s reliability and parameters through open service-level (SLA) monitoring. [ 3 ]
— that MTS has deployed Russia’s first high-precision positioning infrastructure along most of the length of four federal highways totalling more than 4,000 kilometres, which will let Yandex optimise routes and cut operating costs and fuel consumption. [ 3 ]
The three documents differ in depth: RIA Novosti and TASS did not carry the technical detail or the expansion timetable, and TASS alone gave the list of highways and cities in its summary. CNews marked MTS’s claim that the network is the first in Russia with an asterisk and gave no explanation in the available text. None of the documents states the cost of the project or whether the system is fully operational rather than in testing. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
Почему это важно
The reports describe a positioning network running along major federal highways and in five large cities, aimed at supporting autonomous vehicles rather than conventional navigation. In the framing of the official and tech outlets, it is a domestic infrastructure step tied to Yandex’s autonomous transport programme, with further expansion scheduled through 2030.
