An 11-year-old girl was killed and four civilians, including another child, were wounded in a rocket attack on the village of Printsevka in the Valuysky district of Russia's Belgorod region, the region's operational headquarters said. TASS and RIA Novosti reported the death shortly before 13:00 local time, while Interfax, Vedomosti and Kommersant carried the headquarters' fuller account. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]

According to the operational headquarters, the second wounded child, also 11, was taken to Valuyskaya central district hospital with a closed chest injury and was to be transferred to a children's regional clinical hospital after treatment. Women aged 72 and 47 and a man aged 60 were hospitalised with shrapnel wounds to their legs, arms and shoulder. [ 3 , 4 , 5 ]

Two private houses and a passenger car were damaged in Printsevka. The headquarters also reported that in the village of Kazinka a car was damaged by drone detonation and another drone struck an enterprise, damaging windows, while in the village of Dolgoye a drone attack damaged the roof of a private house. [ 3 , 4 , 5 ]

The documents differ on attribution of the strike. TASS and RIA Novosti headlines attribute it to Ukrainian forces; the operational headquarters statements quoted by Interfax, Vedomosti and Kommersant describe a rocket attack without naming the attacker. No details of the munitions used were given. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]

Kommersant noted that the Belgorod region borders Ukraine and regularly comes under attack, and that a federal-level emergency regime and a counter-terrorism operation regime are in force there. Vedomosti recalled that on 6 October two people suffered acoustic trauma in drone attacks in the region, that on 5 October authorities reported one civilian killed and six wounded in the preceding 24 hours, and that on 4 October a driver was killed when an FPV drone hit a truck in Maslova Pristan and a man was wounded by shrapnel in Graivoron. [ 4 , 5 ]

Why it matters

The attack adds to a series of reported strikes on the Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine and where a region-wide emergency regime and counter-terrorism operation regime are in force, according to Kommersant. Casualties among civilians in a border region keep the security situation there in the news and are reported through regional officials rather than independent local observers in the documents available.
