Organizers of the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo said 132,000 people visited the site on 4 October, the highest single-day attendance since it opened. Kyunghyang Shinmun and NoCut News both reported that the figure was close to double the previous record of 67,000 on 25 September, the day of the Chuseok holiday. Kyunghyang Shinmun said cumulative attendance through 4 October was 668,922, or 22.3 percent of the organizers’ target of 3 million. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

Organizers attributed the surge to the first October holiday period and to the large Prime Concert that evening. Kyunghyang Shinmun said Jang Min-ho hosted the concert and that Son Tae-jin, Park Ji-hyun, Kim Hee-jae and Hong Ji-yoon performed, while NoCut News named Bin Ye-seo and Seong-ri as performers who toured the venue before the show. Waiting tickets for the roughly 4,000 seats at the open stage closed early, and organizers screened the performance on the 360-degree media facade of the 20-metre theme island for those who could not get in; some visitors watched from the theme island plaza and lawn. [ 2 , 3 ]

The programme continues into the holiday. At 18:30 on 5 October the expo was to hold DIVA ON STAGE with musical actor Choi Jung-won and singer Luna, hosted by actor Won Ki-jun as an unpaid talent-donation performance open without reservations. On 10 October it plans THE BIG SHOW with broadcaster Park Kyung-rim and musical actor Ivy, joined by musical actor Kim Kyung-sun and crossover tenor Ryu Ha-na. [ 2 , 3 ]

The venue is closed on 6 October and reopens on 7 October after a refit. Organizers said the overseas local government pavilions at the International Exchange Island will be replaced with exhibits from 17 countries and local governments; NoCut News named Hawaii, Havana, Zanzibar, Kochi and Palau among them, and said a new programme presenting island cultures and travel stories will be added. Landscape lighting will be strengthened and heaters replaced for cooler evenings. NoCut News said organizers had already added an event island with photo booths and claw machines, extra guides in exhibition halls, more busking performances and clearer signage and routes after the Chuseok holiday. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

The expo drew heavy criticism early in its run over thin exhibition content, performances staged on trucks under tents and food that critics said did not match its price. Organizers later added hands-on facilities, performances and visitor amenities, and attendance has risen since the Chuseok holiday. Organizing committee secretary-general Kim Jong-ki said the 132,000-visitor day was a meaningful record marking a new turning point, and that the committee would respond with a fuller programme so visitors keep coming until the closing day. The expo runs under the theme of connecting islands, the sea and the future until 4 November at the Dolsan Jinmo district main venue, the Yeosu Expo site and Gaedo and Geumo islands. [ 2 , 3 ]

Why it matters

The record matters mainly for the expo itself: it follows early criticism of thin exhibition content and suggests the event can still draw holiday crowds, though Kyunghyang Shinmun reported cumulative attendance is well short of the organizers’ 3 million target. Organizers say the strengthened programme and free performances are meant to sustain visitor numbers to the closing date of 4 November, and one outlet said it expects the holiday momentum to hold. Relevance outside South Korea is limited.

Still unclear

  • Which performers took part in the 4 October Prime Concert. Kyunghyang Shinmun listed host Jang Min-ho with Son Tae-jin, Park Ji-hyun, Kim Hee-jae and Hong Ji-yoon, while NoCut News named Bin Ye-seo and Seong-ri as performers who toured the venue before the show; the documents do not reconcile the two lists.
  • The cumulative attendance figure and how far the expo is from its overall goal. The 668,922 total and the 3 million target, with attendance at 22.3 percent, appear only in Kyunghyang Shinmun; NoCut News gives the single-day figure without the cumulative total, and no document states the target independently.
  • Whether attendance stays near record levels after the holidays. Kyunghyang Shinmun said the trend was expected to continue to the last day of the holiday, but no document reports figures for days after 4 October.

What local media are saying

Business mediaAll three documents come from business-type outlets and treat the expo as a visitor-economy story, leading on the record daily attendance and framing it as a turnaround after criticism of poor content. Kyunghyang Shinmun added the cumulative figure, the target comparison and the earlier criticism in detail, while NoCut News emphasised the strengthened programme, free admission and the coming holiday performances.
