China Eastern Airlines said it has reported a passenger to public security and stopped providing transport services to him under its own rules, after completing evidence collection, fact verification and legal review of an in-flight dispute. The airline said the passenger's conduct disrupted order on board and seriously infringed the personal dignity and work rights of its staff, and that it is providing psychological counselling and legal support to the crew member involved, according to statements reported by Yonhap, Maeil Business and Asia Economy. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

The airline said the incident occurred on a September 28 flight from Hefei in Anhui province to Dalian in Liaoning province. A crew member pushing a cart for the drinks service struck the elbow of a sleeping passenger, the airline said. The crew member apologised immediately and checked on the passenger, but the airline said the passenger continued to use harsh and aggressive language, threatened to kick the crew member and demanded that staff accompany him to hospital after landing. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

Video circulated online of a crew member kneeling in front of the passenger to apologise. A passenger who filmed the scene told media that the crew member knelt two or three times and that it lasted quite a long time, that the cart was not moving fast and that the passenger had no bleeding or wounds; the purser brought an ice pack for the passenger's elbow, the same account said. Asia Economy also reported online claims that the passenger shouted and swore, that the purser's mediation failed and that the situation calmed only after an onboard security officer stepped in. [ 2 , 3 ]

After the aircraft landed, medical staff checked the passenger and found no clear trauma or swelling and no need for further treatment, the airline said. The passenger declined an offer to be accompanied to hospital and left the airport on his own, according to Yonhap and Asia Economy; Asia Economy reported that he had asked for a hospital examination after leaving the plane. Maeil Business said the airline issued an earlier statement on September 30 in which it said it was re-examining the whole incident and gathering evidence and would strictly uphold the bottom line of aviation safety and protect employees' professional dignity in line with law and regulations. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

The documents do not include any statement from the passenger involved, and give no detail on how the police complaint proceeds. All three accounts rest on the airline's version of events, alongside the account of a fellow passenger who filmed the scene. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

Why it matters

The case tests how a Chinese carrier balances cabin-safety rules and employee protection against a viral in-flight dispute, and it puts a passenger's right to fly on the line. Because the documents report only the airline's account, the outcome of the police complaint remains open, and the case is being followed mainly through Chinese and Korean business media rather than as a wider regulatory issue.
