Hisatsu Orange Railway said on Oct. 6 that it will resume service across its entire line from the first train on Oct. 13, restoring the stretch in Kumamoto Prefecture that had been closed since the July earthquake. The operator had suspended part of the line after the quake and carried out repair work, it said. Replacement buses will run for the last time on Oct. 12. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 ]

The suspended section was between Yatsushiro in Yatsushiro city and Higo Tanoura in Ashikita town, both in Kumamoto Prefecture. The line connects Satsumasendai in Kagoshima Prefecture with Yatsushiro. According to Mainichi Shimbun, the earthquake struck on July 28 with a maximum intensity of 7 in Kumamoto Prefecture, deforming track and damaging station platforms, so recovery took time. The full reopening comes about two and a half months after the quake; Nippon TV News put the interval at 77 days. [ 2 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 ]

TBS NEWS DIG reported that damage reached 96 locations, including deformed track, and that total damage came to about 1 billion yen. Mynavi News listed specific damage including track deformation between Yatsushiro and Hinagu Onsen, a broken feeder line between Hinagu Onsen and Higo Futami, and platform damage at Yatsushiro and Uwadanoura stations, and said the operator had reopened the line in stages before the final section. [ 5 , 7 ]

Mainichi Shimbun, citing the transport ministry, reported that all railway sections suspended because of the Kumamoto earthquake will have been restored once the line reopens. TBS NEWS DIG reported delighted reactions at Yatsushiro station and carried the phrase “日常を支えたい”, a wish to support everyday life. [ 2 , 5 ]

Mynavi News reported that trains will run on the normal timetable from Oct. 13, but that the operator said the reopening date could be changed depending on aftershocks and weather. The same outlet reported that Hisatsu Orange Railway has suspended some trains since Aug. 1, 2025 because of a driver shortage, and that this measure will continue after the full reopening. [ 7 ]

Почему это важно

The restart returns a regional line linking Satsumasendai in Kagoshima Prefecture with Yatsushiro in Kumamoto Prefecture to service about two and a half months after the earthquake. According to Mainichi Shimbun, the transport ministry says this removes the last railway section suspended because of the quake, so no rail section in the affected area remains closed. The effect is local, for residents and commuters who have been using replacement buses, and the operator says a separate driver-shortage measure will continue.
