The Japan Newspaper Association said on October 6 that it had selected the “Citizen Medical Lecture” run by Nishi-Nippon Shimbun Area Group Kitafukuoka for the 2026 Regional Contribution Grand Prize, an award for the community activities of newspaper sales outlets. Nikkei, Nishi-Nippon Shimbun and Tokyo Shimbun all reported the selection. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
Eleven sales outlets belonging to the group, chaired by Hideyuki Okunaga, have held the citizen medical lectures since 2016, co-hosting them with the Nishi-Nippon Shimbun Chikuho General Bureau. Doctors serve as the lecturers. As of the end of March this year, more than 1,300 people had attended in total, and participants have said their awareness of health increased, according to the reports. [ 1 , 2 ]
The association said the lectures provided reliable information free of charge and evaluated them as “leading to preventive medicine and health promotion”. It also decided on seven recipients of the Regional Contribution Award, a separate distinction, and will hold an award ceremony on November 19 at the Press Center Hall in Uchisaiwaicho, Tokyo. The association created the Regional Contribution Grand Prize in 2007 to publicise the community work of newspaper sales outlets, and gives the grand prize to one particularly notable achievement. [ 1 , 2 ]
The reports do not list the seven Regional Contribution Award winners or say whether the lecture series will continue. Tokyo Shimbun carried a headline on the award but its page did not include article text about the event. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
Почему это важно
The prize is an industry award for newspaper sales outlets' community work, so it mainly signals how distributors are being encouraged to run local programmes beyond selling papers. The lectures themselves are a health-education effort in the Kitafukuoka and Chikuho area, which the association says has reached more than 1,300 participants. Its wider impact is limited to that local audience and the newspaper industry.
