Chosun University said on Oct. 6 that it was selected as one of eight final non-capital-region universities in the 2026 artificial intelligence-centered university project, run by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Institute of Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP), Asia Economy reported. Kukmin Ilbo reported the selection and said the university secured 21.2 billion won in project funding. Newsis also carried the selection in its headline. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
According to Asia Economy, the university will receive about 21.2 billion won in national funding over up to eight years, with a separate 10 percent university matching contribution. The university said it moved from the earlier software-centered university programme to an AI-centered one on the basis of that programme's results. Kukmin Ilbo put the secured project funding at 21.2 billion won. [ 1 , 2 ]
Under the plan, the university will create an AI·SW Convergence Institute reporting to the president to oversee AI education across the university, with project director and research lead Byun Jae-young also serving as its head. It intends to hire 100 AI and AX faculty over eight years, open a semiconductor convergence college in 2028 in connection with the Honam semiconductor cluster, and expand its AI engineering major quota to 70 students, the report said. [ 2 ]
Asia Economy also reported a combined bachelor's and master's “AX Elite Fast Track (4+1)” taking 40 students a year, with full master's tuition reduction and lab internships and industry-academic R&D from the early undergraduate years. All students, including non-majors, would have to complete at least two AI liberal arts courses worth 6 to 9 credits, and the university plans to build a “Chosun University AI Data Center” supporting GPUs and multi-LLM tokens through its WeHub+ platform, along with CESIS-based startup support. [ 2 ]
President Kim Chun-sung said the selection recognises the university's innovation capacity in leading software education and that it would use the president-level AI·SW Convergence Institute to convert the whole university to AI and train global AI convergence talent, according to the report. Byun said the university would use its seven CROSS major tracks, the AX fast track and a high-performance AI data center to produce practical AI specialists and act as an industry-academic hub for the region's AI transformation and startups. Почему это важно
The selection turns Chosun University's curriculum toward AI and ties its plans to the Honam semiconductor cluster and regional industry, as set out in the university's own account. The reports show national funding for AI-focused university education going to a non-capital region, but the documents give no programme total, no list of the other selected universities and no results beyond announced plans.
