China Railway Shanghai Group expects the Yangtze River Delta rail network to send 3.84 million passengers on Oct 4, the fourth day of the National Day holiday, saying holiday travel demand remained at a high level. The operator reported sending 3.729 million passengers the previous day, Oct 3. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]
Since holiday transport began on Sept 23, the network had carried 37.234 million passengers through Oct 3, an average of about 3.385 million a day, according to the group's figures. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]
To match demand, the operator planned 104 extra trains for Oct 4, along with 294 coupled EMU sets and 131 additional conventional carriages. Yicai and Jiemian reported that multiple flows of holiday travellers kept routes from the delta to destinations including Shanghai, Suzhou, Yangzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Huangshan, Changsha, Qingdao, Fuzhou and Xiamen busy. [ 2 , 4 ]
Jiemian, citing presale data as of 08:00 on Oct 4, reported that remaining tickets were tight on direct routes toward Sichuan-Chongqing, Fujian, Guangdong, Hubei, Hunan, the northwest and Yunnan-Guizhou. Demand was still strong on routes between the delta's central cities such as Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou and Hefei and smaller regional cities including Suzhou, Zhenjiang, Wenling, Wenzhou, Xuzhou, Lianyungang, Nantong, Yangzhou, Taizhou, Shaoxing, Yiwu, Quzhou, Huangshan, Wuhu and Huainan, with some peak-hour services sold out and more availability at other times. [ 4 ]
The railway advised passengers travelling during the holiday peak to have valid identification ready, follow staff guidance at stations, check which station is printed on their ticket because many cities have more than one, arrive earlier than usual and carry their belongings in line with the rules. Why it matters
The figures describe peak-period capacity on one of China's busiest regional rail networks and show how holiday demand is met with extra services and coupled trains. For readers outside China the event is mainly a data point on domestic holiday travel volumes rather than a change in policy or markets.
