Kyungpook National University said on Oct. 6 that its IB Global Education Center was selected by the International Baccalaureate Organization as an IB Local Professional Learning Provider. Newsis, Yonhap and Hankook Ilbo each reported the selection is a first for Asia. Hankook Ilbo reported that the two South Korean universities selected were Kyungpook National University and Inha University. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
The designation gives the center the qualification to open and run official IB workshops on its own in the region. Yonhap described the IBO as a Swiss-headquartered non-profit education foundation that runs the IB program, which it said is centred on questions and discussion. According to Yonhap, a school introducing IB is required to have its teachers complete a set number of hours of official IBO workshops. [ 2 ]
Yonhap and Hankook Ilbo reported that the university will hold its first workshop on Nov. 7–8 and operate 10 workshops in total over the next two years. Hankook Ilbo said registration for the first workshop can be made on the IB Global Education Center's website. [ 2 , 3 ]
Lee Jung-ryul, director of the IB Global Education Center, said, according to Hankook Ilbo, that the selection is a result of the university's IB education and research base being recognised internationally, and that it will raise teachers' IB expertise through workshops reflecting demand from schools. Yonhap quoted a center official as saying, “we will do our best to build a system for training IB teachers.” [ 2 , 3 ]
The university has built its IB teacher-training base in stages, according to Newsis and Hankook Ilbo: it obtained certification as an IBEC (IB educator certificate) training institution in 2023 and has run competency programs for prospective teachers, serving teachers and university faculty through its IB education expert training support project and the Glocal University 30 project. Both outlets reported that it now plans an integrated system linking graduate-level IBEC degree and non-degree courses, IBO-accredited workshops and an undergraduate-level IBEC course for which additional certification is being prepared.
