Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Oct. 6 that an epidemiological investigation is being conducted after a researcher died following a broken test tube at a plague control research institute in Irkutsk, Siberia, and that further information will be provided as the consumer rights and welfare watchdog proceeds. He told a briefing that he had no information on whether the researcher's body had been autopsied or whether the results would be published, and referred reporters to the watchdog, according to Tass. [ 1 , 3 ]

The documents state that on Sept. 25 the female researcher broke a test tube containing plague pathogen at the Irkutsk institute. She was hospitalised on Sept. 29 with severe pneumonia symptoms and died overnight on Oct. 1–2. Citing Russian local media, the reports say about 200 people who had contact with her are in quarantine at Shelekhov hospital. Korea Economic Daily added that local authorities quarantined around 200 people, including hospital staff and contacts, and cancelled all public events in the area. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

The watchdog said the sanitary and epidemiological situation in the area where the incident occurred is stable and that preventive measures for contacts are in their final stage. The WHO said the previous day that the public health risk to the general public appeared low, according to the reports. [ 1 , 3 ]

The documents note that pneumonic plague, one form of the disease, can spread between people through respiratory droplets, unlike other forms of plague transmitted through fleas or contact with animals. It can be treated with antibiotics if detected early, but Yonhap reported an untreated case can be fatal within one to six days. [ 1 , 3 ]

Asked about US President Donald Trump's offer the previous day to help Russia over the pathogen leak, Peskov said it is good that the two sides offer each other support, according to the reports. [ 1 , 3 ]

Korean business coverage presented the incident as a globally watched case, with one headline referring to worldwide tension over the broken plague test tube and another to the spread of plague fear, while carrying the same official statements on the investigation, the quarantine and the WHO's assessment. [ 2 , 3 ]

Почему это важно

A pathogen leak at a research facility raises questions about laboratory safety and about how much Russian authorities disclose; the documents show the watchdog describing the local situation as stable and the WHO assessing public risk as low, while the Kremlin declined to comment on autopsy details. Because pneumonic plague can pass between people through respiratory droplets, the quarantine of roughly 200 contacts and the attention from the WHO and the US president give the case significance beyond the region.
