WHO keeps low-risk view on Russian plague lab death; Russia denies accident
Версия 2: Russian authorities disputed the earlier account, saying they found no evidence of a pathogen-handling accident at the laboratory or a link between the death and the researcher's work, and a third outlet reported that the US president offered assistance.

The World Health Organization said the public health risk to the general public appears low after a researcher at a plague research institute in Russia's Irkutsk region died following what reports described as a broken test tube of plague pathogen. Russia's Rospotrebnadzor told local media it found no evidence that a pathogen-handling accident occurred at the laboratory and no link between the death and the researcher's work. About 200 contacts were quarantined, and no plague infections have been reported among them.

The World Health Organization said the public health risk to the general public appears low, after a researcher at a plague research institute in Russia's Irkutsk region died following an incident that reports tied to a test tube containing plague pathogen. WHO spokesperson Kristian Lindmeier said that on the basis of available information “the public health risk to the general public appears to be low,” that all contacts of the deceased had been identified and were being observed, and that no one among them had shown symptoms so far, according to Hankook Ilbo. Yonhap reported that the WHO is in contact with Russian health authorities to check the circumstances of the case, the experiments under way and their results, the health of contacts and potential wider effects. [ 1 , 3 ]
Russia's federal consumer rights and welfare watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, gave a different account of the incident. According to Hankook Ilbo, citing local media, the authority said it found no evidence that a pathogen-handling accident occurred at the laboratory, that allegations the deceased broke a test tube containing plague pathogen were not true, and that no link between the cause of death and the person's work had been established. Rospotrebnadzor also said the tests on about 200 contacts found no plague infections. [ 3 ]
Reports described the sequence as follows: on 25 September a female researcher at the Irkutsk plague control research institute broke a test tube containing plague pathogen; she was hospitalized on 29 September with symptoms of severe pneumonia and died overnight between 1 and 2 October. Rospotrebnadzor said the sanitary and epidemiological situation in Irkutsk region was stable and that preventive measures for contacts were in their final stage, Yonhap reported. [ 1 , 3 ]
About 200 people who had contact with the deceased researcher were quarantined at Shelekhov hospital, according to Russian local media cited by Yonhap. Rospotrebnadzor said two of the contacts tested positive for COVID-19 and two for rhinovirus, and that no outbreaks of plague or other infectious diseases had been confirmed so far. [ 1 ]
Pneumonic plague, unlike forms spread by fleas or contact with animals, can be transmitted through respiratory droplets. It can be treated with antibiotics if detected early, but is fatal within one to six days if left untreated. Hankook Ilbo reported that US President Donald Trump mentioned the case and said the United States would give “the maximum help we can.” [ 1 , 3 ]
Newsis carried a headline saying the WHO assessed the public health risk as low, matching the official account, but the article text it published dealt with an unrelated domestic judicial matter and did not address this case. [ 2 ]
Почему это важно
The case involves a laboratory linked to a pathogen that is fatal within days if untreated, which is why the WHO is involved and roughly 200 contacts were placed under observation. The WHO's low-risk assessment limits the immediate international health concern, but the agency said it will reassess as more information is confirmed. Russian authorities dispute that a laboratory accident took place at all, leaving the cause of the death unresolved.

- Whether the researcher's death was caused by the plague pathogen from the reported broken test tube. Yonhap describes the test tube accident and the death in sequence but does not state a confirmed cause of death; Hankook Ilbo reports Rospotrebnadzor saying no link to the person's work was established.
- Whether any pathogen-handling accident occurred at the laboratory at all. Yonhap reports the broken test tube as the account of the incident, while Hankook Ilbo reports Rospotrebnadzor saying it found no evidence of such an accident — the two accounts are not reconciled in the documents.
- The health status of the roughly 200 quarantined contacts. Yonhap says preventive measures are in their final stage and Hankook Ilbo quotes the WHO saying no symptoms have appeared, but no test results for the contacts are given.
- What the Newsis report contained beyond its headline. The article text carried by Newsis deals with an unrelated domestic judicial matter, so only its headline relates to this event.
